Jamaica is responsible for less than 0.05% of global CO2 pollution.

That it's about to be destroyed by a monster hurricane is climate injustice — aka climate colonialism, aka global capitalism — in action.

More importantly, it was highly irresponsible of the @nytimes.com to publish this article (which I know they’ve been working on for months) right now. It sends a message to an unaware public that the socialists in City Hall are somehow responsible for current national attacks on Portland.

All right everybody, time to read (or reread) The 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon. Ground rules: we are not reading for the history of 1848-1852 France, but we're also not looking for direct parallels to the contemporary US. We are looking for broad lessons on politics and just generally good lines.

Just out in PNAS!

We used multi-taxon data to model virtual forest landscapes.

Forest withdrawn from timber harvesting are needed in a much higher share than they currently are in Europe, and extensive forests contribute less than expected to multi-taxon diversity.

Under no scenario is this a good move & in this instance, where no thought has been given to what is being lost & destroyed, there will be bad outcomes. Also, the reconstruction will be enormously difficult.

We should be making more agile orgs to deal with the coming challenges. This is not that.

Coming back to the inspirations in this article, including the idea of a Wildland *Cultural* Interface: “We need to reframe cultural resources and values at risk into a matrix of action; we need to understand the cultural structures that need protection…and they need to be fully accounted for.”
“The man didn’t have to cut a fireline with a Pulaski or a chainsaw; he didn’t have to work in a bulldozer cutting a dozer line; and he didn’t have to have air support to keep the fire out of the trees. The snow did the work.”

They're going all-in on tent camps.

The GEO Group & CoreCivic are expanding the number & capacity of their facilities, but that's not enough for Stephen Miller. On May 17, ICE initiated contracts with these 25 companies to provide “emergency detention & related services.”
