I worked with my @boisestatepublicradio.org colleague @katiekloppen.bsky.social to publish interactive maps of the latest Idaho homeowners insurance data, along with a number of other resources. It’s a hard problem, but seeing the scale of it is a start. www.boisestatepublicradio.org/mountain-wes...

Longtime Boise people, how rare is it for bogus to be this bare in mid December? Potentially disastrous season? Not that unusual?

Under the previously undisclosed program, TSA provides a list to ICE of travelers who will be coming through airports. ICE can then match the list against its own database of people subject to deportation and send agents to the airport to detain those people. nyti.ms/4oUnl4J

Shameful that @opb.org has 25 year employees having trouble making ends meet, while leadership make multiple six-figure salaries. How is this acceptable?
Allison shares her story for our “what our audience doesn’t know” series.

One of the many reasons I roll my eyes these days at all these silicon valley startups raising VC for vaporware products mixing AI and drones that are 'going to solve Wildland firefighting'.

No, they won't.

We had more resources on that one fire than any region has total these days and people thought we weren't doing enough... We were getting so much shit from the public...

Until you see these scorched earth mega fires up close, you just don't have context to understand how unstoppable they are.

There have been numerous fires in Central Idaho over the past 30 years that 'all the kings horses and all the kings men' couldn't stop...

Clear Creek (2000) was my first. Had almost 10k people assigned, #1 priority in the nation, and it was still putting up 8 mile runs.

An important idea I've heard from @amonthei.bsky.social is "unsuppressability." Many are possessed of the VERY mistaken notion that all wildfires CAN BE suppressed. But 4 a select few, there is no technology on Earth that can stop them. Humility is part of the path out of the wildfire crisis.

Chief Fennessy is an interesting hire. He has REAL DEAL fire experience, including serious time and leadership roles on Type 1 wildland hand crews, along with decades w/ high-wildfire structure depts. At a minimum, he'll have the respect of the grunts. www.boisestatepublicradio.org/politics-gov...
Orange County Fire Chief picked as first head of U.S. Wildland Fire Service
Brian Fennessy has nearly 50 years of fire experience, which began in the late 1970s on elite federal hotshot crews and other wildfire teams.
