My take on defining OSR is something like "When the book looks really cool and is fun to read and I perhaps use some of the random tables with very different rules that focus on other things than nostalgia for D&D"

Listened to some Actual Play podcast (I rarely do but I like the folks playing) and the experienced GM switched to first person narration in some combat scenes which really confused me.
Is this for the illusion of competition or something?

Like in video games, you loot dozens of bad weapons just so you can feel clever for choosing your slightly better sword instead.
