1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

I’ve long had a strange obsession with the hurdy-gurdy and its unique sound. Naturally I’ve instantly fallen in love with the new Geologist record (his first solo record) and its use of hurdy-gurdy to tie disparate genres together.

I’m 1/3 of the way into “No Life Forsaken” and I’m loving Bornu Blatt the faithless inquisitor of Va’Shaik.

I think the “cleric who has lost faith but gained a deeper care for creation” is my one of my favorite tropes.

Maybe that comes with exvangelical territory in general.

Unbelievably on brand for this grifter. D’Souza sucks.
Over on X, the Everything App, serious conservative thinker Dinesh D'Souza shared a video of an AI-generated woman on a fake podcast he seemingly thought was real, telling the audience that young women should get with older men. Dude, wtf?

This is a really cool record - shoegaze out of Portugal that very intentionally weaves in a lot of world music influence in the first half (blood) then swings back in a euro/britpop direction for the second half (honey).

ICE has booked at least 3,800 children +

(Drawing by a 5-year-old detained in Texas with her mother. “I am 5 years old” is written at the top. Lower down, next to stick figures, are the words “let us go.” You don't have to know your Bible to hear myriad echoes here, but phew, those too.)

It’s February 1st and I read 5 books last month. Here’s a glance at what that looked like. “Fall of Light” was definitely the highlight for me. Erikson at his best!

I have way too many books in flight but that’s the story of my life as a reader. 😂

January was a tough month, and the music I listened to is reflective of that while also giving nods toward the need for resistance rooted in love. You can read some of my thoughts about the standout new and new to me music and find a playlist of highlights here - www.tommyokeefe.com/blog/mim-01-...

I spent a couple of hours last night digging out my driveway so we could get the car out if we needed to. This morning there is a 4 or 5 foot tall, 6+ foot mountain of slop blocking it thanks to the snow plows deciding it was a great place to push everything from the intersection. 😭💀

I have this tendency to fill my time with constant input. Reading, listening to podcasts, having music on in the background. I’ve been trying to change that lately. I think about this quote from “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind” a lot. Heading out to shovel snow now with no headphones. 😂

they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

Starting a thread for my reflection posts as I read through Les Miserables this year at the pace of a chapter a day. I'll collect all of the existing posts here and add to it when I post in the future.

Here's my initial post about this project:

I think about this quote from Kahneman’s “Thinking, Fast and Slow” often. Sometimes I feel strongly that I “never would have done ___ or said ___” when watching people who are part of the evangelicalism I left behind. The thing is I don’t really know because I no longer occupy that space.

Continuing to read "Les Miserables" at the pace of a chapter a day then write a daily reflection. Today I read part 1, book 2, chapter 3 - the first meeting of Valjean & Myriel. Valjean experiences the power of being fully known and still fully loved.

I’m reading Mark Fisher’s “Capitalist Realism” and so much of what he was observing in 2008 is still relevant today. Quoting a section here:

“It would be a mistake to regard this market Stalinism as some deviation from the ‘true spirit’ of capitalism.
