All right all right time for a new #PortfolioDay. Hello! I'm Lauren, a biologist by day and scientific illustrator by... other times. I illustrate for publications, outreach materials, & sometimes board games! 🎨🪶🐡🧪🌎

Digital illustration of a nosa' luta (Rota White-eye), a small yellow-green songbird with a white ring of feathers around the eye, and an orange beak and feet. This bird is drawn with its wings spread and feet held at the ready, about to land on an unseen branch. The background is a loose blur of colors similar to those in the canopy on Rota - bright yellows and greens, with hints of blue from the yoga berries abundant in this species' habitat. For personal use in my research with The Institute for Bird Populations. Illustration of an island (Bird Island, Saipan) set in a shallow tropical lagoon, fringed by Casuarina and coconut trees. The rocky island is covered in vegetation and tiny dots - lots and lots of birds! More birds are seen flying toward the island, and in the foreground some of these are identifiable as Brown Noddy and Red-tailed Tropicbird. For Nature (NorthStar Games) Illustration of an Indochinese Green-Magpie with its wings spread as it lands in a thicket of tropical foliage and flowers, all under a bright blue sky with a few soft clouds. This bird is brilliantly colored with a bright green crested head, black mask, red-orange wings, and fanned yellow tail with a black bar. For NorthStar Games' board game Nature. Commissioned portrait of a Phidippus californicus immature female on a stalk of Swiss chard. She is covered in fine tan hair as she peers inquisitively toward the viewer. She has long black hairs above the eyes at the corners of her head which look like eyelashes.

Imagine being illegally deployed to Portland and not being able to go watch this because you live in shame and bird fans would run you out of their neighborhood.

Right as I finished filming the video from first post the word naked bike ride arrived with at least a thousand people. I watched them ride thru for 5 minutes straight and they were still coming in in the pouring rain

A new seamless repeat - Star Crinoids.

These fossils can be found worldwide, especially in areas where there is limestone and shale. And in the UK, they are sometimes called fairy coins. 🧚

At some point I'll get around to posting photos from Korea that are less shitposty than this but for now, this will do.
Photo of a storefront in Insadong, Seoul. Above the door and windows is text in English that reads "m'store" and "GALLERY MEME".

#Paleoctober2025 day 11 and 12 paleoart sketches with the Precambrian microfossil Melanocyrillium and the Late Cretaceous antler-like crested pterosaur Nyctosaurus.

Close up of the microscopic vase-shaped cell. Portrait of a brown with white spots Nyctosaurus with its beak pointing downward to the right and its long crest only visible toward the base with the rest going off screen. A rocky shore is in the background.

Yes! And then the antagonistic goofy displays between competitors always makes me laugh, haha. They're such great birds.

It's flicker season in my yard again! This week I've seen both of these two back at the suet feeder in addition to a RSFL-type non-intergrade male. 🎨🪶
Crop from the full chart of flickers showing an intergrade female with a bright tan face and grayish crown, with red underwing. I first saw her in my yard in December of 2024. Crop from the full chart of flickers showing an intergrade female with a mostly gray face and brownish crown, but a bright tan malar stripe, faint red nape chevron, and orange underwings. She has been seen in my yard since January of this year.

For oaky-dokey on tumblr, another #Waymakers donor, a Red-winged Blackbird! This female has herself a cotton candy wonderland in the form of downy white cattails in autumn, lucky her!

Thanks all for your patience as I wrap these up! 🎨🪶 #SciArt #BirdArt
Illustration of a female Red-winged Blackbird perched sideways on the top stalk of a cattail, with the bottom covered in white fluff. She has a pointy gray beak, orange-tinted face, streaked belly, and dark tail. Similar to the males, the wrists of her wings are red, but otherwise this bird could be mistaken for a different species entirely by the unaware!

I love all the Red-winged Blackbird love around here!

For friendsofabracadaver on tumblr, a Least Bittern! Big thanks once again for the #Waymakers donation. The challenge is over for this year but I'll be wrapping up bird art for donors over the next couple weeks. Much appreciation to all of you who joined in!

Digital painting of a Least Bittern clinging to green reeds as it aims downward, watching the water carefully for movement. It has yellow eyes, a very sharp pointy beak, and a mottled gray-yellow-reddish back. The water surface is murky and covered in little green duckweed leaves.

It’s been such a warm Fall here, but apparently that’s changing tonight!
But for now, we still have a few of the fancy sparrows visiting while they rest up before continuing their journey.
One of my favourites is the Harris’s Sparrow and this one was having a good drink!

A Harris’s Sparrow standing in a small creek with its reflection. Its striped tones of dark brown and tan are lit by the morning sun and the creek is a dark black. There are a couple pink rocks by the creek also catching the sun

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

I approve this take wholeheartedly!!

These are soooo hard to see! I get my zoop needs from the much more common Green Herons, haha.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun with it - and still am as I finish up this fun list of species!

As October begins, we contemplate how the sea wind had its way with this now-fungal saint.
scary sea-weathered saint on the church near Hartlepool headland (body of saint is heavily eroded down to a veined or boxwork-like underlying structure of the stone, which looks like weird branching fungus).

That's okay! Sharing the art so that more people see it is always helpful, since some of them may be able to donate! I know not everyone can, it's gotten tough everywhere, so spreading the word is always appreciated!

Thank you! Yeah, wow, 37 donations this year vs last year's 15, with $1650 raised to help bring supplies and assistance to the kids, vs a few hundred in previous years. A huge huge jump, and that's just me, $84,595 was raised in total this year across the whole effort!
