It's a good day to cry.

this morning I’m coping by deleting the final exam from canvas and leaving positive reinforcement on all my freshmen’s participation grades. they’re each so special. I’m relieved to know they’re alive and unspeakably heartbroken for those whose aren’t.

But for now, to the students who experienced what no one and yet too many are experiencing regularly, you are what matters.

(Also, the Rhode Island Blood Center is open with extended hours and walk in availability. Their staff volunteered in big numbers to come in for these shifts.)

The JCB's staff, fellows, and student workers were all safe, thankfully- though the bitter consolation is such that we know that only means that others were not. We will be posting information about our schedules for this week and more as soon as possible.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out by text and email and DM. Yesterday's events at Brown were, as we know, always going to be replaced by another act of gun violence; on a heartrending anniversary of gun violence, it was crushing to see the news this morning of Bondi Beach.

I am heartbroken for Brown and the students, staff, and faculty who have to get through this. I hope they have everything they need to navigate such senseless brutality.

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

My phone is alight with official notices from Brown. (I’m not in Rhode Island today.) Situation is still ongoing as of a few minutes ago.

Heartbreaking news.

I have a baby theory that this Disney deal is an expression of rage against anyone who has creative talent or a wish to do a job that matters. Management resents any work that matters or fulfills. Even when it benefits, even when that work is the primary source of profit.

I LOVE an empty Saturday, but am anxious! shall take Ritalin to (1) clean my apartment, (2) create tomorrow’s final, & (3) hopefully restart writing

one of my favorite songs when I’m devastatingly sad is Put On A Happy Face — there’s a deep sadness in it — by Dick Van Dyke, who I hope is having a happy 100th birthday open.spotify.com/track/4buF9A...

Samantha accompanied me to Easter dinner one year! We didn't have the official AG matching dresses, but my mom found something similar to her fancy tea dress for me.

Thanks to @theotherrbg.bsky.social , I went looking for and found my photos of me with my favorite American Girl (who was the same age as my grandmother but with money, which led to my first lesson about class status and tenant farming in the Florida panhandle).

US borders were never open. Not even in colonial times. We can debate whether colonial, early republic, & antebellum state govts had the admin capacity to seal borders w/ enforcement, but there was a crazy quilt of state laws restricting & encouraging migration. See my pinned post & bio.
4. For instance, the southern border is not open. It has never been open in our lifetimes. But Trump says it is. The Republicans say it is. Their rightwing allies say it is. And the Democrats rarely challenge them.
