The enemy of cynicism and passivity is curiosity, optimism, agency and possibility.

Flip Grater has nailed it.

“This Government’s decisions - in a shockingly apparent and unapologetic way - are focused entirely on short-term gain and greed. And the result is an economy in tatters and an environment in grave danger.”

Wonder what this heat map of Australia will mean for AoNZ weather in the coming days / weeks?
Boiling AUSTRALIA
November heat arrived:
46.7C today at Birdsville (not a random place, but a well known heat champion) is a new seasonal max. in the Southern Hemisphere.

Next days the heat can even get worse, specially at night and some November records might fall.

Stay tuned !

With the asbestos laced play sand debacle, NZ is getting a case study of what a low/no level of regulation means for pushing cost onto consumers and tax payers … in realtime.

Until govts prioritise funding public health systems (pay well, realistic resourcing and invest in workforce planning and training), there will be a dependency on overseas trained staff to fill gaps. And even they are going to leave for better places.
In NZ’s case that Australia and beyond.

There is not enough demand in the economy. Lower interest rates are terrible stimulus. If only we had a Govt with half a clue. (2/2)

NZ govt going hard out on not wanting to deal with impacts of climate change.

An indictment on the limping state of the NZ media ecosystem.

“A single shared source of truth makes it harder for partisan echo chambers to form, or for divisive narratives to dominate. It’s good for social cohesion and compromise.”

Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

@henrycooke.bsky.social you've missed what I think is the most significant change:
- removal all public consultation requirements for setting/updating 2050 targets and 5-yearly emissions budgets.

Meanwhile NZ struggles with an energy-price crisis ... a little policy creativity and innovation could make a massive difference to cost of living and productivity.

Absolutely amazing: they've got so much solar in Australia that they need more people to use more of it, so the gov't has instructed energy retailers to offer *at least three hours of free power* during the middle of the day.

Meanwhile fossil-addled US struggles with an energy-price crisis ...
Energy retailers to be directed to offer free power three hours a day
Saying there is enough solar power for everyone in the daytime, Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will direct retailers to provide three hours of free power every day to consumers.

As the world gathers in Brazil for COP30, the stakes could not be higher. Leaders must join together and do what it takes to protect the people we serve, and the planet we share.

The more countries wean themselves off oil imports, the harder it becomes for the United States to push them around and impose its will on them. In that sense, renewables are also about national security and a country gaining more of a say over its own affairs.

Roche is the living embodiment of that Upton Sinclair quote “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

(In this case the 600K part time salary pays for A LOT of not understanding.)
Does the highly paid Brian Roche not understand how inflation works?

Inflation rates are always historic - the prices have already gone up. Workers are already paying those prices.

When the rate drops - prices don’t go down, they just rise more slowly.

Same data added up. Note that Govt is having to spend (and tax) more to subsidise the living costs of people that can't pay their rent or afford the basics (even if they're working). Our unequal, landlord loving, uberised workforce dependent economy relies on govt getting bigger. The irony! (2/2)
