whenever i see articles and interview excerpts about the ai hype dying and former enthusiasts becoming skeptical, i think of that one post that says something like "in hindsight this was predictable, but to be fair it was easy to see at the start and in the middle of things too"

HIS MAJESTY THE WORM offers some suggestions for "Why" the megadungeon known as the Underworld exists.

1. Origins of the Underworld
The Underworld is an interconnected and impossibly ancient kingdom—in the
past, each section had its own purpose in the greater scheme of the whole. The
Underworld is currently occupied by usurping monsters and explorers in a way
contradictory to its intended use.
The tension between these two truths drives much of the excitement the
Underworld offers.
You must decide the nature of your Underworld and what truths it holds.
Choose something that feels inspiring but prompts a lot of open-ended
questions.
• Is it Hell itself? Is it a prison for wicked souls to languish for eternity in
ironic punishments?
• Is it the first kingdom of humanity? What is humanity’s relationship with
dragons? Siblings? Master and slave?
• Is it a heaven usurped by ancient sorcerers? What repercussions did their
intrusion cause for the cycle of death and rebirth?
• Is it the Garden of Eden, with the Trees of Knowledge and Life at the
center? Are the traps designed by God Himself to ensure humanity never
returned to paradise?
• Is it the Tomb of God? Why did God commit suicide?
• Is it the corpse of the World Giant, whose bones became the earth and
blood became the oceans?
• Is it a series of stolen cities, each piled on each? What is the purpose of the
mysterious Sisters who rule these stolen cities? Why must they never again
see the sun?
Your decisions about the origins of the Underworld will color your decisions
about what the Underworld currently contains. Thus, as you build out the
levels of your Underworld, you’ll be guided by its foundations.

Microsoft notes that you can combine its new Al function with other Excel functions, including IF, SWITCH, LAMBDA, or WRAPROWS. The company adds that information sent through Excel's COPILOT function is "never" used for AI training, as "the input remains confidential and is used solely to generate your requested output."
The COPILOT function comes with a couple of limitations, as it can't access information outside your spreadsheet, and you can only use it to calculate 100 functions every 10 minutes. Microsoft also warns against using the AI function for numerical calculations or in “high-stakes scenarios” with legal, regulatory, and compliance implications, as COPILOT "can
give incorrect responses."

I think characters like Doctor Who and Captain America and Superman and James Bond and Indiana Jones are so fascinating because each is an idealized avatar of a particular cultural identity and when we talk about what they can and can't "be" we are inevitably discussing the heart of that identity.
