so i showed the john oliver thing about bari weiss to someone who hadn’t seen it. i think it’s one of the best they’ve done in a long time. on second viewing it was still funny but i gotta admit the rage:laugh quotient was different than the first time. the shamelessness of these people. it a sin.

Noah Smith seems to now believe that accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, something which is now the consensus of all major human rights organizations on the planet as well as the International Association of Genocide Scholars, is comparable to the 2020 election denialism of the GOP.

Houston Police just arrested the girl who was reading a book in the rainbow crosswalk. Police moved in after the third warning - it wasn't immediately clear why she was arrested and the others in the crosswalk weren't

The thing I love the most about Mouthwashing is that it's very trendy and popular to depict monstrous abusers as smirking, sadistic freaks. By contrast, it says no actually, they're often insecure, scared, bewildered morons protecting their paper thin egos from any punctures.

Just as liberals have a "fight or fold" division I'm starting to think the left has an "actually do shit in the real world, or sit around and pontificate on theory to look smart" division. luckily most of the left is in the actually do shit in the real world camp, but the latter is annoying and loud

Johnson's power to keep unilaterally extending pretend "district work periods" for as long as he doesn't want the House to meet isn't some longstanding traditional power of the Speaker. It's a new thing he's abusing in a novel way.
The House gave the speaker recess authority (‘when no question is pending’) in 1993.
As for adjournment authority (‘at any time’ during a district work period):

there are some defensible reasons the US is not a member of the ICC (there are far more indefensible reasons), but i think the trump administration probably vaporizes the defensible reasons
I am aware of the hurdles here but I think at least some portion of them are gonna have to get sent to the ICC. The response has to be unlike anything we have ever done

Adding to this: As of Sunday night, 105K people have voted.

The state's 10 biggest blue counties make up 50.5% of these voters; that's compared to 44.5% in 2024. That difference is largely about Fulton County and DeKalb County, which contain Atlanta (which has municipal elections).
Georgia has 2 statewide elections next month; Dems are hoping to get their first non-federal statewide win in decades.

One question: Who'll vote in obscure off-year races?!

Georgia now has turnout data online. So far, turnout in Fulton County (Atlanta) is twice as high as rest of state so far.

i could forgive a random normie who was too young to live in the pre-ACA world for not understanding what it accomplished, but a NYT economic reporter really does have a professional obligation to know better than this

In 2024, the Green Party gained 5,346 members.

Today alone, we have gained over 6,000.

Absolutely incredible.

The Green Surge is just getting started.

Along with all the ways this is morally indefensible, this chart indicates the ACA has kept healthcare cost growth 30% lower than goods & services generally. Put another way, even with COVID costs factored in we're still paying 2016 prices for healthcare. How does an economics reporter dismiss that?
