Brian Straw is a high school classmate and someone of whom I think highly
BREAKING: Six people, including congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh, have been indicted on charges of "Assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employees" and "Conspiracy to impede or injure officer," in connection w ICE protests at the Broadview ICE facility outside Chicago.

🧵Remember the preprint claiming SARS-CoV-2 has a "synthetic fingerprint"?

It said a restriction map was "extremely unlikely to have arisen by random evolution.”

I took its claims seriously.

The "synthetic fingerprint" hypothesis collapses. My new preprint explains why.

Oh, that sounds like fun. I saw a local production of The Mousetrap this year and enjoyed it. Did you take Lisa Colletta's detective fiction class at Babson?

Thank you, this was fun! "The impossibility ... cannot dissuade us" indeed.

Decent recs though; I was looking up The Fall the other day and I've never read Borges, I've been meaning to read Borges

DST is why most Americans wake by alarm in darkness. Permanent Standard Time would let us sleep longer and awaken naturally to sunlight, for health!

last month, we spent 4 hours with Chad’s night crew.

it was worth every minute. here is just 6 of them.

give it a watch—because keeping watch is exactly what these crews do every single day for all
of us after dark.

The obvious corollary to all of this is that it is utterly pointless for Canada to negotiate *anything* with Trump. This includes the USMCA.
The sooner Mark Carney acknowledges this, the sooner Canada can get to the business of addressing the US threat in a realistic manner.

Families were making their way to the neighborhood Halloween parade being held two blocks away from this tear gassing. This is life in Chicago these days

I thought @bhaggart.bsky.social's piece was clear-eyed and frustrating.

I don't see that Carney has done very much to continue to deserve our trust. I'm still feeling burned by the grace I extended the Biden admin; so often, too late, we saw there was never a plan.
Carney vs Carney: Desperately seeking certainty
Canada is trapped in an unacknowledged debate over the nature of the US crisis, with PM Carney’s words on one side and his actions on the other.

This is a deep dive into our challenges -- that should be even clearer this morning. If you don't have time to read it today, save it for a weekend read.

As usual we should be holding Canada to a higher standard; Vanilla Trilogy is mid-tier at best and the name is pure camp

Of all the housing charts not made by MMI, this one is my favourite. It shows how, despite rhetoric, housing shortages aren't a global phenomenon, but they do seem to be an Anglo-American one.
