1. Ok I promised to post about what we can do to counter this terrible moment in US History and how to set about getting through the next 4+ years.

So permit me an extended turtle metaphor.

One day, near my house in Rock Hill, a “protected” forested green space was about to be razed to make…
A frowing native box turtle named Strange Peter. He lives on a hill, as a wild turtle, in the hardwood forest of our farm where he was born. He has a name because we see him often enough to say hello, not because he is a domestic turtle.

He’s not the turtle from the story, but is the same species as the ones we were looking for.

He’s is quite pretty.

@repstansbury.bsky.social: "This is gangster activity. The president is trying to shield pedophiles by calling and threatening members of Congress. We need more members of Congress, whether it's the Epstein files, the shutdown, health care, democracy, the rule of law, to just fucking do their jobs."

The Executive is spending money without the consent of Congress.
Other than that, everything is totes normal.

"At a forest scale, you know, it’s really not going to be feasible to fight this invasion with chemical pesticides." As the ash faces an end similar to the American chestnut, NH researchers are working to understand what such losses mean across the natural environment. From Molly Rains
What can the emerald ash borer reveal about the long-ago loss of American chestnut? • New Hampshire Bulletin
For more than 70 years, the American chestnut tree has, mostly, been absent from the landscape. But historical accounts of its grandeur and the tons of nutritious seeds it produced every fall have…

California Governor Gavin Newsom "vetoed a bill on Saturday that would have provided more transparency around the water usage of data centers, which regularly require millions of gallons of fresh water to cool their computers."
Gavin Newsom blocks effort to make CA data centers disclose water use. Why?
Data-center water usage can vary from 110 million gallons to 1.8 billion gallons per year.

Did we, the elder nerds, fail the world by valuing being smart more than being good?

There’s a lot to unpack there.

Looking back, I think Gamer Gate was a historically significant event.

For some, it was the first hint they had of how dysfunctional nerd culture could be.

And it’s hard to understand Thiel, Musk et al without nerd culture as a context.

I’m hearing that downtown Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is underwater today after a terrible storm.

My family has had a connection to the town long enough to remember how the flood in 1911 almost ended the place, so I’m worried.

Sens. Schumer, Merkley, Murray, and Peters are calling for the resignation of OMB Director Russell Vought.

"By impounding billions of dollars … and aggressively pursuing the illegal use of pocket rescissions, Vought has done everything in his power to gut the federal government piece by piece."

🧵 I'm excited to share that my article "Democratic Backsliding and the Limits of Civilian Control of the Military" has been accepted @thejop.bsky.social.

It answers the question "how ought militaries act when civilian leaders turn on democratic institutions?"

Your evening moment of serenity.

Light rain in an autumnal South Carolina wetland.

Now put down your phones and have some analog time before bed.

Tomorrow, I may do a thread about what we learned about our artifacts and maybe another one about how our adventure today led us into an alligator infested swamp all alone at dusk.

It was ok though. I’m going to get to “count” all this in our homeschool records.

We chose the Archeological society event, which turned out great!

It was raining, which meant it was just us and a bunch of real archaeologists as personal tutors for an afternoon.

We got a bunch of farm artifacts looked at, held a teapot spout fresh out of the earth, got books signed, etc.

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

I wish! But my prediction remains: even if the evidence turns up Super-8 and VHS videos of 47 having sex with a 10-year-old girl, it will NOT disqualify him in the eyes of his supporters or THE GOP. Nor would a notarized contract selling his soul to the devil.
