I grow food on purpose and do politics by accident. Former party chair and so on.

The only person on the planet applying Albuquerque street smarts to South Carolina politics.

You have to be tough to do good.

I just keep thinking about how the British royals and other elites absolutely rolled over and fawned over him at that banquet.

What is going on with Britain’s most privileged? Privately, do they wholeheartedly approve of his racism etc?

If so, what are the implications?

If they had learned that, they wouldn’t have had the big banquet for him with allll the photos of Kate making goo goo eyes at him.

My mom never left the house without some turquoise on her, so this makes me feel like real grown ups are in positions of power. 😂

Drop a photo of you that could be an album cover

(Taken during the pandemic. I look 15 years older now.)

Current view from my armchair in the living room. This is ridiculous.

Actual text exchange with my husband. We are hauling my tender young potted trees into the house.

Willie is a large Chaste Tree I grew from a cutting I procured at a Willie Nelson concert last summer. 🌱

Hoping y’all’s polar cold snap is going as well as can be expected.

Ok. Hard freeze coming in the next couple of days, so the gig is up for these limas. Time to get them all in.

Good morning everyone.

Update on my risky green paint project.

I want to move furniture in, fix the fireplace, build the bookshelves, hang pictures etc.

But that will have to wait. We need the room to stage tools etc for work in other rooms.

I think I like this chair here, though.

I took kids on a ramble through the back hollow this evening and had a magic moment.

Do you see it?

Happy fall, y’all.

Folks around here don’t know about Kohlrabi; they like cabbage.

But with Climate change weirding the weather, it is getting harder to grow cabbage.

So I’m experimenting, both with the cultivation of and the potential acceptance of this vegetable. Here is how the crop is progressing. 🌱

Good morning, everyone. I’m sitting here wondering if it is time to take down Halloween decorations.

Our family went to our usual voting location in Rock Hill, SC to vote in municipal elections.

The Mayor, John Gettys, is unopposed.

There was one other race: a hotly contested city council seat.

Next door, people were lined up around the building of a food bank.

Bean news:

Our sojourn out West to care for family members caused us to plant things at unusual times when we got back.

The lima beans planted in August still need time. We’ve already had a light frost, but they survived, so we’ll see.

The snap beans are already canned.

Favas in flower. 🌱

Good morning from the Carolina Piedmont, everyone.

I’m very grateful for the rain we got last week, but I’m so glad to have our blue skies back.

Good morning, everyone.

Sneak peak of how the green paint is coming along.

Many thanks to that one friend who gets the fifth grader all the kinds of Reese’s every year.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Photos from our pre-kid days when we would have big parties at our house.

The “dead bride” party was quite memorable, not least because our foster dog ran out the front door after seeing a headless bride.

We chased him all around the neighborhood in our gowns.

Oh shoot. Just saw that Tom Nichols found this nugget from months and months ago.

Small Asian persimmon harvest this morning. 🌱

When I said these are not a usual crop around here, I should have clarified that we do have native persimmons, which are small, and mostly harvested by wildlife.

It’s hard to beat the wildlife to forest fruit.

Good morning, everyone.

Are you ready for Halloween yet?

If you had not planned to open your door to trick or treaters, can I persuade you to reconsider?

Thoughts and prayers appreciated!

I’m not sick or anything; I’m just about to buy six gallons of Clary Sage paint to color drench an 1870s library/study and honestly I’ve put more thought into this commitment than I did my marriage.

Since this comment has gotten likes for a couple of days, now, I will add a coda:

Make a list of 100 books or other texts that should make it to the next century. Get excellent copies with good binding and paper. Be their guardians.

It’s like you ran into the fire to save them.

Also, read this.

In the summer, this part of South Carolina is a lot hotter than, say, the Pacific NW.

But it is also usually colder in the winter.

That means our windows for growing things like broccoli can be surprisingly narrow.

We planted out large transplants on Labor Day and they’re ready for harvest. 🌱
