Intensifying grassland management leads to massive loss of arthropod species. However, total arthropod numbers remain more or less stable. Many losers, few winners. doi.org/10.1016/j.bi...

The new European Butterfly Red List is published today, with worrying findings. Over 1/4 (28%) of Europe’s 442 species are threatened with extinction or are close to being so. The situation is far worse for our 148 endemic species, 40% are now threatened or nearly so www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

This move opens the door to harmful farming in protected areas

And yet ignores the root causes of farmers’ struggles 💔👨🏽‍🌾

Dutch solar parks approach pollinator & plant biodiversity levels of extensive grasslands, but only on the surface not covered by panels. Soil-emergent arthropods and butterflies lack behind. Proud of Timea for leading besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Fresh off the press! Our perspective in @natrevbiodiv.nature.com discusses the wealth of information on biodiversity contained in historical sources, and its integration for long-term ecological knowledge and biodiversity conservation. A thread on the paper and what led to it:

We actually studied it in Belgium (or the conversion of lawn to meadow via nomowmay) for 3 years in a citizen science project, FlowerPower De Tuin: mijntuinlab.be/projects/13/ lots of failure and disappointment. But also successes. Managing expectations would help. (And there is room for research!)

Even in Europe you do not always/often get the desired result by mowing your lawn less frequently. The species need to be there! Otherwise, you just get long grass (and sad and frustrated garden owners).

An unmanaged, unmown english lawn is full of native flowers that support local pollinators
An unmanaged, unmown american lawn is mostly eurasian weeds that only support generalists

Is a buckthorn thicket on an abandoned lot "[re]wild"? I suppose, but what ecological value does it bring a landscape?

@fornalab.bsky.social Colleague @eeraertsmaxime.bsky.social in action at the @gfoesoc.bsky.social conference in Würzburg with his Synthesis of apple pollination research reveals positive contributions from wild bees relative to those of honeybees. Surprising results depending on the metric!
