Is anyone able to help Noreen today? The Bluesky mods are ruthless with deleting Palestinian accounts ...

Winter has hit Gaza, adding costs for shelter and winter clothes to the already difficult task of scraping together enough money for food. chuffed.org/project/emer...
Emergency Relief for Mohammed, Yassin and Baby Ghaith
Hello friends. My name is Todd and I am a close family friend of Noreen, her husband Khalil and their three children currently in Khan Younis, Gaza, in Palestine. The humanitarian crisis has bore down...

Khalil is Noreen's husband, for whom I have been sharing the past while. Donations to them have slowed and they currently have no other way to get money - Noreen, her husband, and her father all have illnesses/injuries preventing them from working.

Please share and donate if you can!

In my inbox: "Want to improve your pipeline? Get Ferret IgA Native Protein!"

I don't know how I managed to land on this mailing list but honestly at this point I'm interested in how ferret proteins will improve my pipeline.

Geneticist here. Anyone telling you that they can just change intelligence (which isn't what IQ measures well anyways) by fiddling with a few genes is just straight-up grifting, it doesn't work like that. And yes it's basically definitionally eugenics.
I saw this ad on the train and I’m curious how yall feel about it… I’m very much in the center, but slightly more towards than against…

The situation in Gaza is becoming more dire as winter arrives. There is basically no change in how much aid is coming in, and so food and medicine prices are exceedingly high.

Even $5 helps their situation. If everyone who saw this shared or donated $5, Noreen could feed her children today.

I know we are numbed by constantly seeing fundraisers for Palestinians, and worried about which ones are scams, but we can't let that stop us from acting.

Noreen and her family are real people suffering under the genocide. I have spoken with her daily. She is verified by RadioWatermelon.
"I'm sorry if this message bothered you."
If this post reached you, it wasn’t a coincidence fate brought you here.🙏
We’re hurting inside, but still trying for our family.
Help us rebuild, piece by piece.
Your kindness might be the hope we need.💔✨

I’m 56 years old, and for my whole life we’ve been asking some version of the question “what would WE, our generation, have done to stop the Nazis, either in Germany as they were rising, or around the world to fight for freedom.

Now we’re answering the question in real time. Each of us & all of us.

A version of this exact sequence of events is happening to a friend right now. It is terrifying and stupid and they just want to be able to do their job.

A challenge for us. You know Ruaa (now DELETED, itsmeio.bsky.social) relies on this app to feed her family. Asking for help was already so degrading + she barely has internet. So...how many $5 weekly pledges can we get by Friday to ensure help even when banned?

Honestly one of the most underreported stories in higher ed is the degree of anger that many faculty feel about accommodations. People I like. In some cases it’s because its another administrative burden dumped on us (I had to find the rooms for all the students on the final with quiet required). 1/
The administration is extorting universities for billions of dollars and attempting to destroy free speech, academic freedom, and independent thought but the Atlantic talked to a few professors at elite universities who think the problem is that some students need a little extra time on exams

The most embarrassing thing about me is I love academia despite its toxicity. For years I’ve been unable to recommend it as a career path. But today as more institutions are relinquishing what ever made these institutions worthwhile I am not sure the enterprise as a whole will last much longer.

It is Giving Tuesday - what better way to mark it than helping a family directly? It is a daily struggle for Noreen to get food and medicine for her children, with soaring prices caused by artificial scarcity. Help make it easier for her today!
🔴Urgent matter 😭
Please, my children are hungry, please don't leave me. My children are hungry, I need $300. Please don't leave me, donate to me here, please, my dear friends 😭

Can't recommend this lab enough! If you know any students interested in freshwater fish, bioinformatics, evolution, popgen, hybridization, or conservation, this is an awesome opportunity in a beautiful location.
I'm recruiting a new master's student for fall 2026 in my lab at Northern Michigan University @bionmu.bsky.social ! Students with interests in evolution of freshwater fish are encouraged to apply. Please see our lab website lizmandeville.github.io and the attached advertisement for more information.

Sharing again for Noreen and her family. Thanks to some generous donors she was able to get some of the winter supplies they need, but everything is so expensive.

What a single person spends on groceries here is the same $ it costs Noreen to barely feed her kids for a day. Please give if you can!

This touches on a few of the biggest sources of low morale for me:

- flood of AI slop lands in my inbox as peer review requests
- my critical reviews of said AI slop are then ignored by editors at Journals that won't give my work consideration
- all while I'm expected to ⬆️ research output
It's easy to see shoddy research as a bad actor problem. But if AI slop like this can make it through editors and peer reviewers, it means there are systemic problems at work. And I'd argue that at least part of the problem is the overwork culture in academia-- pressure to do more while caring less.
"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se
