the nuzzi story is fun and all but at the center of it is the elevation of a man who has dedicated his life to making children catch preventable diseases to a position where he can enact harm at enormous scale

"The experimental mRNA vaccine prevented 60% to 67% of flu infections, while the conventional vaccine prevented 44% to 54% of infections." The side effects were minor, such as sore arms and fevers, not severe ones such as myocarditis.
Experimental mRNA flu vaccine is more effective than conventional flu shot, but causes more side effects

In a phase 3 trial, participants who received the shot were 29% less likely to be diagnosed with flu than those who received a conventional flu shot.

Governments and institutions are obviously not infallible, but I continue to be gobsmacked by the way this administration has completely and thoroughly upended the credibility of the HHS and CDC.

Is U.S. absence from climate talks a "self-inflicted economic threat"?

Some COP32 attendees believe "Trump’s policies will eventually leave the U.S. itself dependent on China as the global energy market shifts to cleaner products. That trend could hollow out the U.S. industrial core..."
"It won’t be long before we have a queue of American governors begging BYD to set up electric car factories in the States."

As the US slams the door on climate, China makes it very clear at COP30 that it's open for business.

China strides into US-sized gap at climate talks
In the Biden era, countries interested in clean energy “were motivated to buy things from the U.S.,” an African official says. But now Beijing has few rivals.

This is an absolute *must read* by @nickhunebrown.bsky.social on the impact of AI slop in an era where journalism trust is already depressingly low, and why fact-checkers are more important than ever. As a freelancer who agonizes over accuracy and getting quotes right, this was a mind boggling read.
A few months ago @thelocal.to got a promising pitch from a writer with bylines in whole bunch of reputable publications—The Cut, The Guardian, Dwell, Architectural Digest, etc. Then I started investigating. Here's a story about fabulists in journalism's AI slop era. thelocal.to/investigatin...

- NONE of the arrested were criminally charged
- NO evidence the building was "filled with TdA terrorists."
- ZERO legitimate reason for DHS to rappel from a Blackhawk.

So much work remains to be done.
