A Chocolate Royal (Remelana jangala) spotted at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park, Singapore on 12 Oct 2025. A moderately rare, but pretty, butterfly.

"This has created concerns among archivists, historians and archaeologists that future generations may face a sort of "digital dark age" when they look back for material from the past 50 years or so."

Spookiest decoration at the "Zoo Goes Boo" event at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids? Giant model of parasitoid wasps hatching from cocoons affixed to their caterpillar host.
Large model of a green caterpillar, the back of which is covered by dozens of white cocoons. Wasps can be seen emerging from some of the cocoons.

A fascinating book that looks at the large variety of moths found. It covers the major groups of moths except one: the butterflies, which have their own book.

Review at my website [ sohkamyung.github.io/reviews/nonf... ] and on BookWyrm [ bookwyrm.social/user/sohkamy... ].

Like other members of the Hyperbaeninae, Dialarnaca zhoui spins silk to create shelters from rolled leaves. What ISN'T common is the species' striking pink and gold colouration! This gorgeous leaf-roller is known only from the Yunnan province in China. #EverydayEnsifera

Our first observation of a Hook-winged Carpet moth (Anachloris uncinata) for the season this weekend.

The caterpillar of this moth feeds on leaves of native Guinea Flowers (Hibbertia sp.), which are flowering madly at the minute.

This Beautiful Friend from Perth is the Western Banjo or Pobblebonk Frog! This species is only found in the southwest corner of Australia and they were kind enough to share their Song of Bonk with us while we were there!

How fortunate am I, that not 100ft from my back door this wonder of evolution decided to post up. She—a bolas spider, Mastophora stowei—spent her nights luring in moths from the low branches of a sassafras tree in our yard. Luckily she picked ideal spot to capture her with a bolas at the ready

The weather’s warming in the Perth Hills so there’s increasing moth activity.

More moths in the trap than we’ve had for a while on Saturday night, despite very smoky conditions overnight from numerous prescribed burns 🔥

Managed to get shots of this Pacific Swallow (Hirundo javanica) resting on the railing at Springleaf Park Connector, Singapore on 12 Oct 2025. Lovely details when seen from up close.

A swallow resting on a railing. It has a red face, blue back, white chest and dark wing feathers that extend past the tail. The bird is facing right, but with the head turned slightly towards the camera. The same bird, but with the head now turned to look to the right. The same bird, but for the other side. The bird is now facing to the left. The same bird, still facing left. But the head is now turned to face the camera.

Spotted around 10 of these lovely moths all sheltering amongst the prickly branches of a local native Grevillea yesterday.

I think this is a Concealer Moth, but I haven’t been able to ID it more specifically despite its striking appearance.

My cartoon for the books page in this week’s @theguardian.com
Title: Where writers really get their ideas.

A writer, holding a note in his outstretched hand approaches a cart in the park. The front of the cart reads 'Fresh ideas' and a colourful umbrella shades the server who is reaching deep into the body of the cart (much as an ice-cream vendor might) and saying:
"I'm all out of mind-blowing concepts and heart-rending narratives, but I've got an acerbic observation, an unexpected outcome and a couple of amusing notions."

Failed to find any pseuds on Thursday's short cycle ride but @jeremybartlett.bsky.social found me this lovely Pale Tussock caterpillar.
A hairy, pale yellow caterpillar with black lines between the body segments and a row of four 'shaving brush' tufts along its back crawling along the ground, heading left. On the caterpillar's rear end is a slender tuft of pale red hairs pointing up at an angle. Temnothorax isabellae, from the rainforests of Puerto Rico, is one of the more colorful ant species I have photographed.
Macro photograph in side view of a small ant carrying a bit of tree bark in her mandibles, her gaster tucked tightly under her body pointed forward. The ant's head, antennae, gaster, coxae, and femora are black, the thorax and petiole are red, and the tibiae are bright yellow.
