My gut says the U.K. is gonna use this to try and knock down the Gillick competence, which I personally think is one of the transphobic agenda’s side quests

Nearly-perfect printed and handwritten text recognition is the most consequential technical contribution to the study of human culture of the last fifteen years, and it's not even close.

It fundamentally changes our (both lay and expert) relationship with the written past.
New issue of my newsletter: "The Writing Is on the Wall for Handwriting Recognition" — One of the hardest problems in digital humanities has finally been solved, and it's a good use of AI newsletter.dancohen.org/archive/the-...

BRILLIANT!!!

(And not just because O, Tannenbaum was the first carol I ever learned in a language other than English - and Britten This Little Babe was drilled into me in sol-fa in high school)
Much like Sid James isn't Benjamin Britten, this also is not Benjamin Britten.

Funny, this headline does the exact opposite of calming my nerves!

I hit "pin now" to get the popup to go away, and have never clicked into it again. It just sits between my OneDrive and Skillsoft thingies on the left sidebar, unloved.

To anyone who has experience working with fonts and typefaces, I sincerely apologize for the monstrosity I’m about to show you.
I’m very sorry to announce this to the rest of the country & the world, but a transitional logo has been chosen for the 2034 Salt Lake City Olympics & this is it. Why does it say Utah? We don’t know. Why is the font illegible? Yet another mystery. Did they go ugly on purpose? Again, no idea.

Are the rolls particularly special/different than, well, the "soft white rolls" from the supermarket that they look like?

Question is, will the sparkles come out in wee or poo?

(clearly the most important question!)

Gorgeous!!

And if your earlier message of "too much fabric" is still true, plenty of opportunity for tiebacks or other cute detailing to match :-)

To give an idea of how damaging this change is, a typical dual fuel household will see their bill rise by £2.50 in January.
A household using an electric storage heater - already most at risk of fuel poverty - will see a £100 increase. That is deeply unfair and needs to be addressed

Differences like this are why I list American English and British English separately under "languages I proofread/copyedit"
Seeing people write things like “on accident” (rather than by accident) makes my lexicography senses tingle. It seems on the one hand obviously wrong and yet clearly makes sense to the person writing it and I want to grasp why?

Both my grandads served in India but would still have given a proper kicking (after taking into account local/religious sensibilities); FIL - who was RAF ground crew in 1944 - would have gone straight to the kicking (as would all my great-uncles who served in Europe in various guises)!
Honestly though imagine saying to your grandad who landed at Normandy that you can have swastikas on ships now.

My Dad does the opposite; he talks about "them in Kath H***'s house" (Kath H died easily 30 years ago...)

GORGEOUS!

Also, a *proper* pie, unlike those dishes of stew-in-a-ramekin-topped-with-potato (which is not a pie due to lack of pastry).

Oooh, now I really fancy a pie tomorrow...

We're doing mvt 5 while seated; my neighbour can't see Sophie even when she's standing up because of the bass drum (sorry Soph!) 🤣
It's sounding AMAZING - if you can get to Liverpool for tomorrow evening, tickets still available. + two pieces of Pärt for his 90th birthday year.
Happy place!
Brahms Requiem tomorrow evening, with Domingo Hindoyan, Sophie Bevan and Samuel Hasselhorn 🎶

It's clearly disprovable by the fact that pre 2014, married persons who received a GRA needed to have their marriage dissolved ~because two women/men couldn't possibly be married~
(I think it worked the other way too, ie if one of a Civil Partnered couple got a GRA they could no longer have a CP).
The Supreme Court dismissed living as a man or woman under the GRA as merely a matter of paperwork, while effectively ignoring the same question in the context of gender reassignment.

The instructions now show that both Acts have, in effect, the same criterion.
