Two unidentified crew members from HMCS TRENTONIAN during the North Atlantic crossing in April 1944. It is still cold on the open ocean as there are icicles hanging from the kisby ring. @RLitwiller #RCNavy Photo Collection. See MORE zurl.co/lBEmW
Piecework is how military clothing and uniforms were made 200yo and there is a straight line between that labour and this. Done by women, for next to nothing, this work built modern fashion, if not the modern world.
I interviewed one of these factory workers in Los Angeles. She gets paid three cents to sew a zipper, five cents for a collar, and seven cents to prepare the top part of a skirt.

This is how fast fashion brands like Fashion Nova can put "Made in USA" tags on dress shirts that retail for only $25

British colonial officials destroyed countless files before decolonisation. But one colony has been neglected by the literature: Hong Kong. My latest paper in @jich.bsky.social examines the past, present and future of Hong Kong colonial government migrated archives: doi.org/10.1080/0308...
Hong Kong Colonial Government Migrated Archives at Hanslope Park
Following the revelation in 2011 that the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office was sitting on the migrated archives of dozens of colonial governments, almost 20,000 files were transferred from s...

Lord embarrassed for us that our lawmakers had to be in the room with Trump for his weekly “I’m not dead” appearance.
Why not send them to listen in their bunks for their elementary-level politics lecture like they did in 2020 on the USS Theodore Roosevelt? You know, that time that Trump and the DoD tried to let Covid rip on an aircraft carrier?
Buttered mashed potatoes with salt and pep, after you haven’t had them in a long time, are the most delicious thing ever. So perfect. So humble.
Having worked on clothing in the navy I can say that “logistics gay” is a very common modern sentiment from the public to academic historians.
I know these guys are all dumber than a sack of hammers, but it is fascinating to see the military decide “logistics are gay” in real time

The problem with switching to flannel sheets season is that now I never want to get out of bed even more than usual.

Omg I was just thinking this morning that it was only a matter of time
Got to look at 1950s sailor inventories today because apparently the RGSS never stopped requiring them! We saw records for deceased Indonesian passengers going to the Hajj and my first sailor killed by motor vehicle, hit by a lorry in Genoa while on leave.

Please help spread the word about our CFP? Id love to get a wide variety of posts for this series
CFP: 'Academic Processes and Digital Humanities' - Global Maritime History
GlobalMaritimeHistory welcomes proposals for our new series ‘Academic Processes and Digital Humanities’. We are looking for people to talk about the processes (especially technical processes) that they use to do their research, analysis or both.  Some of the things we would love to have you write about Transcription of Documents Textual Analysis Materials Analysis Materials Conservation/Art Conservation Mapping, GIS and related topics Use of R and data visualization Databases and their varied uses Using websites to display projects and findings Collective projects/collaboration This series is very much about these processes, and it is not at all required that your research be on a maritime topic. If how you do what you do is neat and you think that it would interest other people or help other people with their research, we would love to hear from you. Proposals do not need to be any particular length. The blogposts should be approximately 800-1000 words, however we absolutely do encourage longer posts. We also encourage embedded youtube videos, images, anything that can be embedded into our posts. Also, please do not feel the need to moderate your enthusiasm. This is an audience that appreciates procedural and technical enthusiasm. Posts should be written for an educated but not expert audience. Links to tutorials and similar material is always appreciated. We are also open to tutorial videos, or other formats instead of written blog posts. If it is technically possible to be done on WordPress then we are very much open to creative approaches to discusses processes.  If you are unable to submit something in the near future but are interested in contributing over the longer term, please do get in touch. We’d love to hear from you as well. This series is open to grad students, early career researchers as well as more established researchers. We will not be entertaining any proposals either written by or having to do with the use of generative AI. If you are interested in contributing to this series please email Dr Samuel McLean

Brazil mostly booked! Excited to use the only Portuguese word I know, "baccalieu!"
Pretty rich considering that if women took this advice the next cartoon would be "omg look at what these stupid women are wearing!"
We are still open for participants in this year's workshops! You don't have to be a historian to be involved or consider yourself a maritime historian.
Grad student or ECR? Join us at Maritime History Workshops for our 5th series of sessions WE'RE ALL MARITIME HISTORIANS NOW OR ARE "WE"? Our Fall schedule has been posted w guests speaking on career and research difficulties in the current global climate at maritimeworkshops.com. #maritimehistory
Why would I have four limbs if I could cut off my own arm? I can outsource the role of my left hand to another lesser body or have chatgpt randomly spit out a summary of what bending my elbow is like. People will pay $10,000 a year to see my missing arm.

Who’s been working on amazing maritime scholarship this summer? Finish it up and submit it to us at Mainsheet! We could use some more submissions for our upcoming issue— it’s our first general issue, any topic in maritime studies. www.mainsheet.mysticseaport.org/post/3355-ca...
