When we were working on The Dream Is Over, I was listening to Black Messiah daily. One day I was struggling with a melody for our song “The Coast.” I went back to Black Messiah & in trying to learn the whistle melody from “The Door” immediately found what I needed for my part.

And his music was fucking incredible. Obviously. The choices — from players, to harmonic sensibility, to melodicism, and his overall vision — are, to me, among some of the very best made in any popular music in the past 30 years.

He spoke about body image and the music industry’s impact — the GQ article around Black Messiah iirc — at a moment where I really needed to hear it. By doing so, he showed a young kid in Toronto that the most important element in creating music was remaining steadfast to oneself.

Been listening to D’Angelo all day. His music was a touchstone for me when I was at my most myopic; I heard him blending R&B, Funk, Jazz, Rock, and Hip-Hop in a way that showed a listener like me that the very idea of genre was a limiting & lousy pursuit in the creation of art.
