I did my PhD at Brown in 2005-10. I always felt safe on campus. It is devastating to imagine that how that safety was violated last week, how 2 innocent students lost their lives, how 9 others were injured,& countless others terrified. We cannot let this continue.

And I am so grateful that I have been able to create a life for myself. It wouldn't have been possible, as a woman, even 50 years ago.
I don’t think estrangement is new. But it also used to be harder economically, certainly for single women, to live independently on your own. A lot of parents don’t love that their children now have the option to leave them and live fulfilling lives.
There's no hard data, so it's impossible to know for sure, but I suspect the number of adult children cutting off their parents isn't significantly higher than it used to be, and what's actually new is that the children are now explaining it in therapy terms rather than simply ceasing contact.

Anyone here using Leo for archival transcription? www.tryleo.ai

I signed up, but am not (yet?) seeing advantages over Transkribus (www.transkribus.org) - Transkribus gives a LOT more free credits (i.e. free images processed). Its Dutchess model is only maybe 65% accurate for me, though... thoughts?

If you have some time, please help PhD student Marta Guidotti with this survey on reading comfort.

You'll be asked to adjust different parameters for texts in languages you can and cannot read to improve reading comfort of texts.

The test takes about 10 minutes at most.

The Low Countries Beguines had a particular interest in St. Alexis, as he was known for choosing a life of chastity 'in the world' - just like them! The Mechelen Beguines dedicated their church to him, and those at Bruges had a confraternity.
The Image of Saint Alexis or Alexius
Attributed to Georges de La Tour, 1593 - 1652

Alexius lived in a cubbyhole under a stairs from where he taught catechism. After death, a note was found on his body explaining his identity to his family who had failed to recognise him.

(Fragments of) medieval manuscripts were often re-used in bookbindings. MA-XRF scanning can penetrate the bindings without having to take them apart and so make long lost texts legible. One of the finds is a 12th century manuscript containing a text by early 8th-century English scholar Bede.

This is a great demonstration of the fundamental, unfixable inherent falseness of the large language model and why it's a dead end.
It will do this with false statements about people, and false statements about medicine, science, history, etc.
It will never get better. It is a waste and cancer

As a Brown alum, I am utterly devastated today. I cannot imagine the pain and terror that the victims endured. I grieve with the community.

America's gun culture is utterly insane. We have to figure out how to fix this.
