I also wish we got more gothic romance movies. I think gothic is going to be one of my 2026 themes for the year.

Don't make me tap the Robert Pattinson quote, Leto.
“I always say about people who do method acting, you only ever see people do the method when they’re playing an assholes,” Pattinson said in an interiew with Variety in November. “You never see someone being lovely to everyone while they’re really deep in character.”

Watching it in the theater, I didn’t know it was going for gothic romance because the trailer was more focused on the ghost aspect, so it almost felt like the genre was the twist. A lot of people didn’t like it and thought the trailer was misleading, so those of us who liked it really hyped it up.

I like the movie a lot, but I definitely agree with a lot of your points. I kind of wish there was a book version, because I imagine a bunch of that stuff would have been in a book telling this story.

40 years ago on this day, Eddie Blake was murdered. The crime remains unsolved.
A panel from the 1985 comic WATCHMEN by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Most of the panel is red with blood, including a yellow smiley face button with a spot of blood across the right eye. Text across the top reads: "Rorschach's Journal. October 12th, 1985: Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face."

Along with directing an episode of TWIN PEAKS, Diane Keaton also directed four movies (one doc, three features).

I’ve only seen two: HANGING UP and WILDFLOWER. They’re both flawed but interesting and make me wish she’s directed more films. I gotta track down the other two.
Diane Keaton, Meg Ryan, and Lisa Kudrow in Keaton’s HANGING UP Patricia Arquette in Keaton’s WILDFLOWER

Looking for more books in the vein of four that have blown me away this year: sweeping emotions with a bit of history. Romantic longing a huge plus; sad English people not required but clearly a recurring theme

If you like superheroes or comics at all, you owe it to yourself to read The Power Fantasy by @kierongillen.bsky.social and @casparw.bsky.social. It’s heady, complex, surprising, fun, and emotional. The characters are unique, the art is expressive and colorful. The best comic going right now.
The cover for The Power Fantasy #12 shows a Black boy playing with a tank, robot, and little green army men on a pastel background.

The supporting cast of OSCAR (1991) was such a deep bench of talent.
