His eyes flash in indignation, like flames glinting off the blade of a sword.

She raises an eyebrow in challenge. Can you take it?

His jaw works, cheeks hollowing, and she can guess what he’s doing: sucking on the fabric to draw out the taste of her. Even bound and effectively gagged, Kylo can give her a look that’s hotter than the warmth of the crackling hearthfire. I’ll take everything you have to give me.

It’s obvious from their overly loud conversation, what brings this group of newcomers to the tavern. A shared revulsion towards what they don’t understand. The need for liquid courage in what will ultimately be a futile endeavour.

“Don’t you worry, little lady,” one of them says to the barmaid with a wink. “We’ll keep you safe from the Boone Beast. Going hunting for it tonight.”

She gives the man a fake smile then locks eyes with the bartender across the room.

Good thing the Boone Beast will be otherwise occupied later this evening—in the bed of their shared cottage.

She'd stabbed him. The realization doesn't hit her immediately, and she watches Kylo's eyes widen, then lower to where there's suddenly a hole in his side.

He falls then, and Rey has to stop herself from trying to catch him, because a part of her tells that she should just leave him and be done with all of this. She could leave him. No, she admits to herself bitterly. That hasn't been in the cards for a while now. Not like this.

So she kneels beside him, pouring light into the wound she'd given him, willing the flesh and skin to stitch itself together. "I wanted to take your hand," she whispers, and she doesn't know if he's heard, but something flashes in her mind.

A vision beyond time, beyond worlds, of Ben Solo holding out a hand to her with the softest of gazes in a lush garden filled with more flowers than she’d ever seen in her life. Her hand slips into his, warm and without hesitation.

On the wreckage of the ship, she weeps silently, letting the thrashing waves and sea foam hide her salty tears. Maybe it’ll be easier next time.

In another life then, Ben.
