Forty years ago MLB teams opened their books to an independent economist and were proven to be lying liars who lied.

Until they open their books that way again, let that be your default assumption about any claims they — and their media water carriers — make about their finances.

This is a good read.

My opinion on Mattingly is the same as it was for Garvey and Hodges and others: If you've been rejected 15+ times by multiple voting sets, you're not a HOF'er.

Vets Cmttes should be for guys who barely got a chance in the first place. Like: Lou Whitaker.

I’m just wondering how many ways we’re going to hamstring defenders before anyone addresses the fact that the pitchers are too close to the hitters, and that drives almost every gameplay problem baseball has.

the second, pre-shift ban, mind you, had a great chart about *where* the hits were disappearing. You'll note some density on OFers playing deeper, which will eliminate some hits, but could especially turn extra bases into singles:

I took my first dose of estrogen 23 years ago today. I have achieved far more since: bestselling books with BP, a decade w/ESPN, now life at the Chronicle back home in NorCal at the back half of a career that has taken me from coast to coast. I've covered the World Series, Super Bowl, the NBA Finals

Players weren’t inherently more (or less!) “loyal” prior to 1975. They just were legally prohibited from becoming free agents unless their team wanted them to become free agents. Thats not the same thing as Tony Gwynn or Cal Ripken or whoever.

there is zero chance the Yankees failed to turn a profit in any year, but especially in 2025 when they were coming off a World Series appearance. If an MLB owner says he lost money, that's like me saying I can fly. You should insist on proof.

(I can't fly, just so no one asks me to demonstrate.)

The biggest disruptor to college basketball's MTE environment began a little more than two years ago, when a low-level agent DM'd a Patriot League player. Now the Players Era has gone from 8 to 18 teams. Next year? A whopping 32.

Journalists are supposed to care about facts. It's a fact that RFK Jr. believes vaccines cause autism, but it's also a fact that vaccines do not, in fact, cause autism, documented in plenty of studies. When you cast it as "scientists' opinions" vs. "RFK's opinions" you devalue factual evidence.
