Seeing how much he was able to do and contribute to the community he loved always brought me so much vicarious joy. I am truly heartbroken to hear that he's passed. He was a rare gem, and he made an impact even on people like me who only crossed paths briefly.

That place went under. Rob was in one of the early rounds of layoffs before the ship sank completely, and he was anxious, but also hoping this would be the push he needed to turn freelancing into a career. We lost touch, but I've followed his work from the distance in the years since then.

He helped me get my feet under me while working my first "real job." We talked about DnD and VtM, but also my hopeless addiction to buying more indie RPGs than I have time to play. One he was happy to fuel with additional recommendations.

A couple days later, he was walking by my desk, saw my Numenera desktop background and immediately backpedaled to geek out with me about all things TTRPG. During the time we both worked there, he was a standup dude. Hilarious, warm, and always standing up for the little guy.

Circa 2013, I had just gotten my first non-minimum wage job after college as an ecommerce copywriter in Milwaukee. One of the first people I met was Rob, who initially introduced himself as the guy who wrote "jewelry, accessories, and all things manly."

I've been struggling to process this news all day, honestly. One of the early conversations I remember having with Rob involved him telling me that if I thought "Arthurian Legend meets Big Stompy Mechs" sounds fun, I should check out Camelot Trigger.

Rob Wieland's first email to me was on Sat, Oct 21, 2006, asking to get the PDF of Spirit of the Century to go with his physical-copy purchase.

There since the beginning.

Wish he could've been there until the end.
Cover of Fate Worlds Volume 2: Worlds in Shadow, featuring cover art taken from Rob Wieland's contribution to this book, the amazing King-Arthur-in-Mech-Suits CAMELOT Trigger setting. Armored mech-knights suit up to face the robotic horde led by the giant-floating-head MerGN-A! In this interior image from CAMELOT Trigger, we get a closer look at the giant floating head MerGN-A as her mouth opens to disgorge endless flying robots. Writing credit:

This is my Senator. This isn't the most polished response, but I have been calling her repeatedly to urge her to make stronger condemnations of what Trump and Rs are doing. You can tell this isn't her comfort zone, but I appreciate this more than the "I'm committed to compromise" email I got.

Baldwin: Our farmers are facing incredible headwinds. A lot of the fertilizer inputs come from Canada. Those have shot up because of tariffs. About a quarter of all farmers use the ACA for their health care coverage. This president is just contributing to the headwinds that our farmers are facing.

Some definitely did, but Dane County is one of the largest farming counties in WI, and it wasn't just Madison college students there pushing it to like ~75% for Harris. Just saying. She's my senator and I've been calling her constantly to make clearer condemnations of Rs.

I like that we're measuring crime in restaurant-based metrics now.

Trump: "The restaurants were all closing, now you can't get into a restaurant. They're opening up new restaurants. It took 12 days for us. We sent in not politically correct military. We sent them in based on merit."

My ADHD ass never wrote a paper until the night before. My pièce de résistance was writing an in-class essay pop quiz about Bartleby the Scrivener, which I did not have time to finish reading, and my teacher loved it so much she read it to all her classes. GenAI essayists would have died in 2006.

honestly the ballsiest thing I’ve ever done was to turn in a 25 page Milton paper I had started & finished the night before it was due, along with my 2 friends who had done the same, AND submitted our equal-length group chat of running Milton shitposting we’d been doing while writing. we all got As

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.

For millennia, Nimrod was the name of a mighty hunter, but 3 generations of people's exposure to cartoon animals using it ironically in *2* stories turns it into a word people use to mean "an unintelligent, easily fooled person."

But do tell us more about your "constitutional/biblical originalism."

It can be incredibly hard to see your progress when recovering from depression or burnout. The whole world keeps demanding certain benchmarks of you to the point that it’s easy to feel like a failure despite your hard work. Remember your progress is your own journey. Every win means something.

This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

I have a full day today, but I woke up early to put this edition of my newsletter together because I need you all to have this rundown of what we've been up against this week in Chicago as the federal assault on our city continues. To ignore these developments would be a damning mistake for us all.

I’m horrified by Trump’s order to send 300 National Guard troops to Chicago. We’re only nine months into a four year term and already the president is trying to invade an American city. If you’re in the Guard, you can and should refuse these orders.

The more people that turn up and show Wizards that supporting trans people is popular, the better. Make it inescapably clear to them who their players are and what you care about.
