Hawthorn’s very name speaks of its role as the guardian of old boundaries; “haw” comes from haeg, meaning hedge, so it is literally the “hedge-thorn”. Its crimson fruits carried many country names: haws, eglets, hazles, halves, hograves, gazels, hoggins and skeehories. #folklore

Among its many magical uses, hag stones, witch stones, and fairy stones are known for protecting homes from evil spirits, pigs from swine-fever, milk from turning sour, and sailors from witches clinging to their ships.

In European folklore the wren is a heroic figure who brings fire to the world. All the birds hold a council, and the wren volunteers. But, in the process of flying close to the sun, its feathers are scorched, giving it its brown color and short tail feathers.

On my last trip to Japan I discovered an intriguing Japanese Buddhist goddess called Marishiten who was introduced to Japan from India via China. She is depicted in various forms (both female and male) and was said to ride a chariot drawn by seven boars, or to ride upon a boar.

Eggshells were broken into tiny pieces once cracked as a means to prevent witches from sailing along with the crew.
Funnily enough, eggshells in witchcraft can be used as a banishing tool.
So sailors would use witchcraft... to dispel witches. 😂
