I just wanted to thank you all for continuing to support my research and writing. I've had a bit of a rubbish time of it recently, but the fact people keep returning and being so kind is a genuine joy to me. Thank you 💚

Today is the anniversary of the death of John Goodwin, Ironbridge poacher. He drowned in the river Severn after a police chase. He was part of the same gang of poachers as Tommy Rogers. 2 months later Tommy would be the one to recover John's body. Many local people blamed the police for his death.

In my latest article, I have built upon previous research. It discusses the Coalport ferry disaster of 1799, and the many lives lost to the river. This one is personal to me, as it also includes my own families loss.

Today is the anniversary of the deaths of the 'Nine Men of Madeley'. Of the nine 'men', most were still boys who died in a mining disaster. I have rewritten my article to reflect new research about the tragedy.

My latest blog post discusses the complex story of Emma Davies, who was at the centre of 'The Shropshire Hoax' in 1883. Though not a traditional ghost story, I believe her story is important.

I've found the most interesting account of a community's response to a witch from 1828 Shrewsbury. It's intriguing, tragic, and an insight into the realities of life on the fringes of acceptability. I am hoping to have it added to my article on shropshire witches this week. Im excited to share it!

I love church kneelers and always look for them when I go churchcrawling. I think they are such a wonderful piece of folk art. I was particularly happy to see this delightful trio of guinea pigs in Alberbury church. 💚

Tommy Rogers (b.1849) was one of the last Severn watermen. He was a coracle maker, poacher, and larger-than-life Ironbridge character. Known for his expert knowledge of the Severn, he saved 8 lives and recovered more than 80 bodies alongside his son from the river Severn.

Thomas Light was a conjurer who lived in the early 19th century at High Ercall. He consulted the stars, summoned spirits, and satisfied the needs of locals with both curses and cures. He was often heard wrestling with supernatural beings and even the Devil at night. 🌙

One of the things that's most exciting about writing my book about The Devil in Shropshire is the complexity of these stories. He is more than a stock character. He is a powerful conduit for the fears and attitudes of a community. Through these tales, we connect to our past.

Church Preen Church is Norman in origin and was founded by Cluniac monks. Its ancient yew, dating to around 457 AD, was once described as being one of England's noblest. Yew trees symbolize death, rebirth, and protection. In Shropshire, they had healing properties and were guardians.

My brother Tom is a wonderful writer and shares his work on insta at @composition_ofwritings , but I just had to share his reflection on the aftermath of Samhain. It calls to mind the quiet landscape of our childhood and he envokes a world of ghostly companions and omens. I just love it!
