Wild thing looking at the NY mayor election is that the Cuomo campaign appears to consist entirely of AI generated deep fake videos of his opponents. Someone is 100% going to copy that here and we need legislation to be ahead of this

Rather than reflecting on why they got things wrong during the election campaign, a distressingly significant section of Ireland's commentariat instead have gone into an active denial of reality, publishing "analysis" with zero relationship with the real world. This is a self-made crisis for media!

Not only was Joanna Donnelly the only one of these four smart enough to stop her campaign once she realised she was out her depth, she's also the only one here who doesn't come across as staggeringly arrogant and utterly delusional
Four one-time Áras hopefuls on what they'd do differently if they could turn the clock back
What might have been? We caught up with Gareth Sheridan, Kieran McCarthy, Nick Delehanty and Joanna Donnelly.

On the night we elect his successor, this man, this artist, is in my thoughts.
What service he has given us.
Not only as President but as our first Minister for the Arts. This photo I took on Inis Oirr in 2021 is one of my most treasured. Go raibh maith aige. #Aras25

Remember, respectability politics is a way to keep people in their place. This is incredibly petty, and again, when the worry about Catherine Connolly was that she would not be able to conduct herself at official events properly...
The Taoiseach is not coming to Dublin Castle for the official declaration of Catherine Connolly's victory in the presidential election.

Whether intended or not, it's going to look very confrontational for the head of government NOT to be there to congratulate the new head of state

We need to have a word, an offensive one, for these people who want to run for president but think the work of TD, Senator, Councillor, Mayor, MEP or party activist is beneath them.

Áras-holes?
David Quinn on Brendan asked if Maria Steen would run again, "Seven years is a long time". So there is nothing else for her except president? Predictable. #aras25

This is pretty much it. The angry vestiges of punitive catholic ireland, the rabbit holed ex hippies, the conspiracy theorists, the terfs, the fascists, and the disenfranchised footsoldiers sold on misinformation and hatred.

A soup that's been brewing for years, thanks to austerity and rw money.
This spoiled vote thing is a Big Flashing Danger sign in the week of racist riots in Ireland - we're stumbling towards a crisis with no leadership or will to tackle misinformation, criminality, intimidation.

And we've seen it coming since the Anti-Vaxx loons started screaming in chemists.
Last time voting in my current polling station, btw (assuming there isn’t a snap election soon).

28 years periodically spending 15 minutes on journey there, back, and voting.

Election polling staff at Limerick’s Presentation National School: thanks, you’ve always been fab.

Highly amused by the lads scribbling on their #Aras25 ballots to spoil them and then posting them on The Internet so that someone will actually see them.

I scrawled this myself a month ago on The Internet.

Well, I’m off to vote, so I am. Thanks for the extra power, folks.

In the @uk.theconversation.com, I rehearse - in briefer form - my arguments _for_ play in grey space, arguing that it affords opportunities for play, connection and care that green space often can’t, and that it’s politically important to value play in these spaces.
Children should have a right to play in the streets, alleys, pavements and car parks of their neighbourhoods
Play isn’t just for playgrounds.

Mamdani is already getting the criminals out of NYC!
It is a designated museum though - at least the ground floor - but I don’t know if that stretches to the East Wing.

Mind you, the East Wing is a decade older than the interior of the main building (Truman gutted it and completely rebuilt it) so… 🤷‍♂️

Nah.

The 1966 National Historic Preservation Act exists, but the WH is exempt from s106, which would stop this happening anywhere else.

He can order the whole thing taken apart. Y’know, like the country, its democracy, and its reputation for generations.
Oh, I forgot to add that the Fuhrerbunker wasn’t just constructed under the (Old) Reich Chancellery: it was under the reception hall / ballroom that Hitler added in 1936 to the building.

The White House ballroom is being built over the presidential bunker.

No originality with these fascist twats.

Mark Esper’s 2022 book claimed that Trump wanted to have the person who leaked that he hid in the bomb shelter under the East Wing tried for treason and executed.

Not aside, the site of the Führerbunker is, as y’all know, now a car park.

edition.cnn.com/2021/07/13/p...
Pointed visual metaphors aside about what Trump is doing to American democratic institutions, the current East Wing was built in the 40s to hide construction of the presidential bomb shelter below it.

Trump hid there at the start of the George Floyd protests.

Is he caking the bomb shelter in gold?
Scoop: Trump has started demolishing the White House's East Wing facade to build his ballroom. The president had claimed construction of the $250 million building wouldn’t ‘interfere’ with the existing White House structure. /W @ddiamond.bsky.social wapo.st/4hqBNiU

If you've followed along for the past three and a half hours, I suggest therapy (you also clearly have time for therapy)...

... but, also, thanks for bothering.

That's it: go away.

That's it for this month, now.

Three meetings on the Maybe Watch calendar next month: Metro meeting on Nov 17, BUDGET MEETING WITH ALL-DAY BREAKFAST on Nov 21, regular full council meeting on Nov 24.

Email [email protected] to watch any of those online.

Hey, hasn't this been fun?

Point 2 there is your If You're Not Too Lazy to Send In An FOI Request, Local Papers suggestion.

I'd like to know who's, er, wrong there. Easy verification.

Council and businesses have opposing views as to whether that happened.

Be useful, send it in.
Official response includes three pertinent things:

1. Council would be liable for injury caused by broken parklets.

2. Council engaged a number of times with all adjacent businesses over recent years.

3. We're going to look at alternatives & there'll be a public consultation.
Sarah Kiely wants to know if people (the businesses) were informed by the council, as the council has stated.

Businesses say they weren't, council says they were.

One of them is ly--er, wrong.
