Today is the birthday of cartoonist, illustrator, & animator Winsor McCay (Sept. 26, 1869-July 26, 1934). Best known for the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland and his early work in animation, particularly on Gertie the Dinosaur (1914).

An installment of Little Nemo in which his toy animals slowly grow and come to life over eight panels.

Seeing the Bill Watterson originals full of pencil lines of stuff that didn’t work, scuffs the eraser didn’t pick up, white out galore and more was something I needed to see to remind myself that nothing is perfect the first go and tweaks need to be made and you’re allowed to try again.
