@durbin.senate.gov @duckworth.senate.gov Please don't do this. There is no point in a deal where there are no irrevocable commitments from the other side. And there clearly aren't.
Durbin is a YES on this deal: “At Democrats’ urging, today’s bill is not the same one we’ve voted down 14 times. Republicans finally woke up and realized their Groundhog Day needed to end. This bill is not perfect, but it takes important steps to reduce their shutdown’s hurt.”

Statement from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

I’m really grateful for Pritzker. But that he’s so good at this also makes clear just how badly most other Democrats are failing to meet the moment.
In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it?

If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say?

Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

Pritzker: "People of Illinois, we need your help. Get our your cell phones, record and narrate what you see. Put it on social media. Peacefully ask for badge numbers and identification. Speak up for your neighbors. We need to let the world know that this is happening and that we won't stand for it."

What's the most random/obscure thing you quote?

In "The Stand' by Stephen King (complete/uncut ed iirc), a character called The Kid would sometimes say "how do you like that happy crappy?" and I often say that to myself/out loud for various reasons lol.

NIH director Jay Bhattacharya posted on X: "No clinical trial has been delayed, nor has any participant been dropped from clinical trial. These are the facts."

Malaria, tuberculosis, cancer trials abroad have all been on the chopping block, leaving participants stranded, I reported in this story.
NIH grant cuts will axe clinical trials abroad — and could leave thousands without care
US agency’s new policy could abruptly end studies of infectious diseases and cancer, leaving researchers scrambling for funds.

Other reporters threatened to boycott the trip.

Guess what happened next.

The Pentagon caved.

I said I'd talk about how reading @adapalmer.bsky.social's "Inventing the Renaissance" might change how I'd have written the various Renaissance-themed GURPS books, and now I'm back to do so. Thread, using alum from papal mines as a mordant:
I have purchased and taken delivery of @adapalmer.bsky.social's new book. Now I must find time to read it and then think about how, in retrospect now that it's too late to do anything about it, I should have written the GURPS Renaissance books.

Well in that case, just to be clear: I advocate for due process for Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

Also for anyone else any government proposes to arrest, imprison, deport, or impose whatever illegal and/or unconstitutional measures the current or any future administration can dream up upon.
JUST IN: Deputy Assistant to the President and "Counterterrorism Czar" Sebastian Gorka says anyone advocating for due process for Kilmar Abrego Garcia could be viewed as "aiding and abetting a terrorist" and be federally charged. (h/t Philip Germain)
