So your solution to systemic racism is cosplay as the “acceptable” Black? That’s not accountability, that’s assimilation. Respectability won’t save you, it just makes oppression more palatable for the oppressor. You’re not challenging the system, you’re begging to be its favorite.
Dear Black people, if we want some of us to be treated with higher standards in society, we have to start holding ourselves to those same standards. When we present ourselves in ways that reinforce negative stereotypes or reflect low expectations, we leave the door open for judgment and ridicule. 👇🏾
