An acting troupe and their aulos player are our pick this #MosaicMonday. This panel comes from the House of the Tragic Poet, Pompeii and is held by the MAN Napoli. The sense of festivity is a delight!

#AncientRome
The panel depicts seven figures who appear to be getting ready for a play. One wears a theatrical mask pushed up onto their crown, one plays the aulos, while another figure sits before a tray of masks - this figure may be a choregos. The touches of light blue in the borders adds a sense of lightness to the scene.

A rather grisly #MosaicMonday

Villa de Noheda, Villar de Domingo García #Spain
During the #Roman occupation of Spain, there lived a man who was so wealthy that he could have his wine shipped all the way from Syria. One of the largest mosaics ever found.

#Archaeology #art #History #artwork
The Roman villa: The villa itself is immense, covering about 24 acres, and belonged to a wealthy aristocrat, potentially connected to Emperor Theodosius I.
The mosaic: The mosaic is the largest figurative one discovered in the entire Roman Empire, spanning over 291 square meters in the dining room. It is rich with mythological and daily life scenes, including the abduction of Helen of Troy and the chariot race between Pelops and Hippodamia.
Discovery: The site was discovered by accident in 2005 when a tractor hit a hard spot in a field.
Current status: The site is an active archaeological excavation, and while only a small portion has been explored, it is considered one of Spain's most important Roman sites.

Hikers arriving at the top of Cerro San Luis under a blue sky.

#EastCoastKin #Hiking #LandscapePhotography
A couple of hikers are on a wide trail that has just reached the top of Cerro San Luis in San Luis Obispo. On top of the mountain is a large clearing and a wooden deck (just the corner is visible). There is green shrubbery on the mountainside. In the distance, we see the valley and more hills and mountains. The sky is mostly blue with some scattered clouds. This view is looking towards Los Osos and the ocean (not discernible in this image).

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Agio Triada) in Meteora, Greece, built in the 15th century and part of the UNESCO World Heritage

#Stunday #SundayYellow #MountainMonday #BlueSkyMonday #photography #landscape #scape #nature #RockinTuesday #thelittlethings #photohour #EastCoastKin
The picture shows one of the famous Meteora monasteries in Greece, perched atop a high, steep sandstone rock. The name 'Meteora' means 'suspended in the air,' aptly describing the location of the monasteries. The massive rock on which the monastery stands dominates the image. The rock walls are rugged and reddish-brown in color. Green vegetation grows at the base and on the slopes of the rock. On the summit of the rock, several buildings can be seen forming the monastery complex. The buildings have light beige walls and red roofs. The sky in the background is dark on the left side, while the monastery and the rock are illuminated by the sun. This interplay of light makes the monastery stand out against the dark backdrop.

There's a river near our house, which means we get creepy mists in autumn. Here's one that I took a picture of while walking Kitty-boo. It was literally coming right for us - Boo couldn't care less, though, and just dragged me away as it was getting interesting 🙄

#Spooktober #MistyMonday #creepy
A photo taken close to sunset, of a meadow behind our house. On the left, a bit of a small building, which belongs to the church and whose purpose I still don't know, is visible. Next to it is a tree. The rest of the picture shows the meadow, with ruins of a former barn in the middle (now just one row of stones that used to make up a wall, mostly overgrown by nettles), and in the background some more trees and forested hills. There are some orangeish clouds in the sky, tinted thusly by the setting sun. From the tress in the background, a layer of mist can be seen creeping toward the camera, with denser vegetation peeking out from it here and there. At that point it had almost reached the barn ruins, which, just like the grass between them and the camera, were still clearly visible (or as clearly as the phone camera allowed).
