Something ancient and wonderful for the weekend! 🤩

The world’s oldest known sculpture of a horse!

This tiny figurine was carved from mammoth ivory by an Ice Age artist some 40,000 years ago!

These brave women aren’t allowed share their story on SM if they want to remain in their previously abandoned convent near Salzburg.

But we can share their story.

A pair of gold armbands from the Colchester Fenwick hoard, buried before Boudica’s attack in AD60. As the Roman last stand took place where Colchester Castle now sits, the owner may have perished where their jewellery is now displayed @ColMuseums.bsky.social

Piazzale delle Corporazioni #OstiaAntica faces the river Tiber.
Floor mosaics were laid in rooms flanking the square. Motifs were linked to commercial activities. Inscriptions name corporations of traders, ship-owners & entrepreneurs from Ostia & other significant trading communities.

Some of my favourite my favourite retellings/reworkings of Ancient Greek stories and myths. I never get weary of these stories from the past.

Good morning 🌅

Happy #Thanksgiving to all my family and friends across the Atlantic. May you have a peaceful celebration.

My photo is from earlier this week. It’s grey and rainy on this late November morning. No photo needed to show the murk. I’m tucking into #WritingThursday.

A #Roman wooden ship, excavated from the bottom of the Rhine near Utrecht (Netherlands) in 2003. It sank about 1850-1800 years ago - probably very quickly, as a lot of artefacts were found inside, suggesting the crew were not able to salvage them in time 🏺 #AncientBlueSky

I’m almost finished reading @elodieharper.bsky.social historical fiction novel, Boudicca’s Daughter. I was not expecting the story this wonderful author has written. It’s an original take on the story the Roman victors left for us, and the subsequent creation of Boudicca and her daughter victims.
