I honestly don't know how they actually get away with calling it that — usually they're narrower units so they can squeeze more side by side. There's not room in the layout for a means of egress from the bedroom, so they put something that's not quite a full wall around the "bedroom"

I think a lot of people don't quite grasp how little documentation of a legal identity anyone had before, like, the 1930s. No social security number, no green card, no driver's license. This made you reliant on your social network; OTOH nobody could force you to write your name a certain way.

oh god, this is very real, between when i signed up for the childcare subsidy waitlist and when i got off it i lost a well paying client and suddenly i didn't make enough to even qualify for aid (they kicked me to the state, which offered me like 30 minutes a week)

Wait, is he promising to tackle Donald Trump, because he might be onto something there

"No one bullies me. Remember, I was a linebacker," Harrell says, talking about Trump, to warm laughter in the crowd.

IIRC he had a lot of money earmarked for this kind of thing and declared it "surplus"

Harrell is saying, of his opponent Katie Wilson's plan to build 4,000 shelter units in 4 years, "that cannot happen! There's no money for that!"

I have no doubt that, given the chance to meet Martin Luther King, Jr. and ask a single question, Bruce Harrell would absolutely choose "what did you have for breakfast?"

I followed up on a lecture he gave about The Piano subverting the male gaze with "yes very interesting and bleak that when you subvert the male gaze you still get raped" and straight up got a "no, that's incorrect" lol

("Urban one bedroom" is real estate for "studio with designated sleeping area")

When I was working for Curbed I toured a new MFTE building and they told me that a lot of single moms live there and I mentioned that it's great that they had 2- and 3-bedroom apartments and they said "oh most of the single moms are in our urban one-bedrooms."

Promoting the editor-in-chief's personal side project. Zero named sources in a story that promotes the editor-in-chief's personal political position. Misspelling the subject's name. It took one day for CBS News to become a conservative blog.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

I had this problem with a film studies prof in college (not printouts, but feedback saying I was wrong on subjective points about symbolism) and it took me YEARS of comparing notes with male peers to unpack that it was 100% misogyny.
regdog.bsky.social
In school I hated being told what I got from a book or what the book said to me was wrong. Teachers had printouts that said what the symbolism of this or that was. If you saw something different from that you were wrong. End of story.
Smartest kid in class had it out with the teacher because of that

TIL that Washington State still has a Christian Science exemption to child and elder abuse.

The class required to become a Christian Science practitioner lasts two (2) weeks.

app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default....
Findings and intent—Christian Science treatment—Rules of evidence.
The legislature finds that there is a significant need to protect children and dependent persons, including frail elder and vulnerable adults, from abuse and neglect by their parents, by persons entrusted with their physical custody, or by persons employed to provide them with the basic necessities of life. The legislature further finds that such abuse and neglect often takes the forms of either withholding from them the basic necessities of life, including food, water, shelter, clothing, and health care, or abandoning them, or both. Therefore, it is the intent of the legislature that criminal penalties be imposed on those guilty of such abuse or neglect. It is the intent of the legislature that a person who, in good faith, is furnished Christian Science treatment by a duly accredited Christian Science practitioner in lieu of medical care is not considered deprived of medically necessary health care or abandoned. Prosecutions under this chapter shall be consistent with the rules of evidence, including hearsay, under law.

the idea that i have to defer to imaginary disabled people who can't write or draw and need a slop machine to do it for them before i talk about the way it's made my neurodivergent-ass life worse is offensive
sarahannelloyd.com
YES. oh my god. helpful tools are useless now.
nora.zone
it's especially galling when because of my memory problems i have learned extremely well how to use web tools as a second brain, to hold data i couldn't memorize. i could just look that stuff up. because of clutter from generative slop, it's impossible to find such information anymore
sarahannelloyd.com
The "oh what will neurodivergent people do without AI???" thing reminds me a lot of "what will seniors do without Uber????"

(Also, I have ADHD and this bubble is affecting me and other people like me profoundly negatively, please stop doing this)

the idea that you get to use people like me as props in an argument and then dismiss our actual responses as "internalized bigotry" is deeply condescending and incredibly ableist in itself
joeyvazquez.bsky.social
But I'm not even mad at you b/c I know that most internalized bigotry against your own is just a function of trying to fit in with the dominant group to protect yourself from them.
