I think about this a lot in terms of technological literacy. I used to boot games and stuff on the family computer from DOS because Windows didn't exist yet. Consumer grade computers were new and if you had one, you had to know how it worked.
some generational shifts or cohort shifts are real. if there was no Internet for part or all of your childhood then shit was different. you had far less ability to seek out your own preferences and could only access media through far narrower channels.
