I went into this year kinda resigned to the fact that volpe was much more likely to be a light-hitting good defensive shortstop. which is worse than we were hoping/expecting, but was still good for just over 3 bWAR his first two seasons! that's not nothing!

3. Play through a labrum tear! Volpe underwhelms on offense to start his career, but at least he has a lot of defensive value! What's that? Play through a shoulder injury that only gets fixed via surgery? Sure, that can't set him up for his worst defensive year AND another bad offensive season!

1. Before he even makes his debut, use him as an excuse not to sign an obvious fit at shortstop. Using Volpe to justify not spending on Seager put inordinate amount of pressure on volpe to come up and contribute immediately.
2. Essentially have him skip AAA. Fans wonder why he looks overmatched.

I don't know how many times i've said a version of this, but the yankees keep making it relevant. For a player the yankees hinged so much on in terms of the future of the team/roster construction, they have set Volpe up to fail at every turn. Add this handling of an injury to the list.
