SCOOP: The United States Tennis Association (USTA) quietly updated its player eligibility policy to ban trans women from competing as women in their leagues, tournaments and competitions in order to comply with Trump's anti-trans sports executive order. The policy went into effect on Monday.

So I rewatched the first four episodes of The Rising of the Shield Hero, and suffice it to say that I'm torn on the show (Season 2 quality drop aside, which is a distant memory for me).
Naofumi's character arc for this section is about him getting the short end of the stick in a series of events that had nothing to do with him as a person, and he responds by resorting to deeply unethical (or at least ethically questionable) methods in order to survive. The show seems to present this as a necessary evil (literally and figuratively), and tries to sell the viewer on the idea that Naofumi is being conspired against at every turn, and so the only logical response is for him to be a hardass to everyone he meets. It’s almost a “then let me be evil” sort of response, underscored by the fact that Naofumi resorts to purchasing a slave girl when presented with the option. Naofumi does start to scale back his hardass persona as he spends more time with Raphtalia, but he still attempts to utilize the slave pact/magic to force her to fight. When Raphtalia warms up to him, praising his name, it has many shades of Stockholm Syndrome (which is alluded to in episode 4, where some people accuse Naofumi of forcing her to claim that he’s nice to her and that she follows him of her own free will; her words are true, but there are undertones of her sticking with him because he was water in a desert). There’s also the fact that Raphtalia physically ages up rather quickly, as if the show is trying to quickly switch to making her more mature so that it can give romantic undertones to the relationship later. Raphtalia was a small and very young child in episode 2, and by the end of episode 4, she has physically matured into at least an older teenager, if not a newly-christened adult. Naofumi is established as in his 20s and in college in the first episode, so there’s definitely an age gap here. It’s true that the both of them were dealt a bad hand in life (at least in the world of Melromarc) and they are bonding in part over their efforts to help each other overcome those hardships, but even these first four episodes give off enough undertones to give me the ick. Japan is notoriously conservative, and given the recent wave of discoveries related to pe******ia in the United States’ conservative political party in 2025, that topic has been weighing on my mind (gravely). If anyone else reading this has seen the show: am I reading too much into this? Is the show just trying to be wholesome by using dark topics to tell a heartwarming story that will make audiences cry? (Because god, I still cried so much on this short rewatch.) Or am I potentially onto something and Shield Hero might be a symptom of a problematic writer/premise/culture?

Earlier this month, a 15-year-old died by suicide the day after posting about a substitute teacher insisting on misgendering him.

Suicide can have many contributing factors. His family is speaking out about bullying and misgendering as two.

Three disks arrived today from a donor! Now I have a monstrosity set up to (hopefully) get the data safely migrated into the NAS, get the larger disks installed in said NAS, and hopefully get our desktops back to normal!
A bunch of hard drives sitting outside of a tower PC case, with assorted plastic keeping some of them off the hardwood floor. More disks are mounted inside the case.
