Restoring liberalism after illiberalism is no easy task: Leaders face hard choices between acting quickly and effectively while maintaining a commitment to democratic procedure. Worse, their illiberal opponents stand to benefit either way.

Is research performance related to academic freedom? A preprint co-authored with @lutzb.bsky.social conducts a large-scale empirical analysis on the national level to this question. osf.io/2mh8f #academicfreedom #AcademicFreedomIndex Short 🧵

🚨New Research 🚨

Ahead of the release of Wave 30 of the BES Internet Panel, the team has examined Labour's decline since the 2024 GE.

Labour's support has splintered into mostly indecision or left-liberal parties, but they've also lost their few right-wing voters.

If leading indices suggest only a modest erosion of global democracy, what explains the widespread perception of steep decline?

コロナのときの復興補助金に際しても、フォンデアライエン委員長は必ず現地に足を踏み入れ、当該国の担当者と対面で会っていた。この徹底した現場主義がこの委員長の強味だと思う。
Tomorrow, I'll travel to the 7 Member States that strengthen and protect our external borders with Russia and Belarus.

I want to express the EU’s full solidarity with them.

And share the progress we're making in building a strong European defence industry, esp. through SAFE.

This book blames democratic control for American students' low achievement and provides a definitive analysis of local education politics.

Why has women’s rise in politics been so slow even under PR?

Our new APSR paper [out today!] shows how “hidden majoritarianism” in proportional systems shapes women’s progression from entering lists to reaching top offices.

Norway votes in 11 days 🇳🇴

More than a century after PR was introduced, women still hold under half the seats. In Norway’s closed-list system, nomination order is decisive—women are projected to occupy ~44% of seats in 2025 (based on 2021 party seat shares across districts).

There will be many casualties from UChicago ending ('pausing') PhD admissions in Humantities, but one which I am keenly aware of: this is close to a death sentence for teaching cuneiform in the United States (esp. Sumerian, Hittite, Elamite, Eblaite, Luwian) and it will affect the whole world.
“Chicago has long helped to keep alive tiny fields & esoteric areas of humanistic study... Without the univ’s support, & the continued training of grad students who can keep these bodies of kn going, entire spheres of human learning might eventually blink out.” www.theatlantic.com/culture/arch...

Labour Home has published my thoughts on Braverman’s plans (probably also Farage’s plans) to quit the ECHR. They won’t work and will harm, not help, the UK’s ability to enforce its immigration policy (as well as trashing other cooperation with our neighbours). www.labourhome.co.uk/the_first_ti...
