Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

winter's tale on the brain lately, what a truly weird, beautiful, flawed (not in a Problematic sense, of course, but rather a 'creating a coherent work of literature' sense), singular book i'll always love in spite of myself, and somehow one of the things that best reflects how i feel about new york

Reminder to add TOKYO GODFATHERS to your Christmas movie watchlist this season! Grateful to have given (English, dubbed) voice to the trans anime icon, our beloved Hana, in this Satoshi Kon holiday classic from @gkids.com! Watch it for free on Tubi or rent it on AppleTV!

it's the season, thinking about Her (the special pink dress linda cho made for anya for the thanksgiving day parade so it would pop on tv that was only ever used that one time)

i've said as much before but the way in which certain corners of the internet backlashed a particular kind of self care so hard they reinvented the bootstraps model of life with an aesthetic sheen is astonishing to me and i can guarantee it's causing people (mostly young) a lot of needless suffering

One of my favorite things is getting to tell friends who are new to NYC that the subway "stand clear of the closing doors please" voice is a trans woman named Bernie Wagenblast and she's amazing.

thinking about some beloved food i'll never have again: capogiro gelato, specifically the seasonal fruit flavors and bittersweet dark chocolate, city bakery pretzel croissant, iris cafe country ham biscuit, multiple different falafels, the house special wonton soup at charles plaza.......

a container of soy sauce exploding all over your living room floor is bad, but when it is immediately followed by almost falling backwards off a ramp onto concrete and cracking your head it becomes endurable by comparison. or perhaps worse

one of my better qualities as a person is i'm not a smug know-it-all, but tbh if i wanted to be just a little teeny tiny bit of a smug know-it-all about, for example, the stuff i have an advanced degree in, i think there's a possibility i'd be morally justified

have listened to some bangers from chess and decided to finally learn what the plot is, obsessed with and inspired by the willy-nilly commitment to their own canon "Sometimes she was raised in the UK and sometimes in the US, and sometimes she's Czech." so true

i know it's too early for christmas decorations or whatever but i am the world's softest touch for spying an illuminated tree when it is dark and cold. the rules for when you're supposed to do that are nothing in the face of the gentle, lovely melancholy of the aesthetic, etc

flb is not en vogue anymore for some very legitimate reasons and some not*, but i certainly wouldn't be who i am, or pursued ya lit how i did as an area of study perhaps, even, if i hadn't picked up the big omnibus copy of dangerous angels in b&n in high school. also the rose and the beast.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"
