PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!

The University of Texas-Austin is beginning a process to eliminate the Black Studies, Latino Studies, and Gender Studies departments in the College of Liberal Arts. This is a grave threat to the educational liberty of students, faculty, staff, and the people of Texas. 1/

If SCOTUS doesn't have the time to provide a thoughtful explanation for the decisions they're making, they should just let the lower court decision stand until they have time to do so.

This is the entire problem with the shadow docket. It's sloppy justice by sloppy justices.
romancingnope.bsky.social
If this is the case, then SCOTUS needs to stop admonishing lower courts to respect shadow docket decisions as legitimate precedent.

Amy Coney Barrett defends heavy use of the shadow docket: "If we wrote a long opinion, it might give the impression that we have finally resolved the issue, and in none of these cases have we finally resolved the issue."

“Spirited out of state”. Editors are really going through the thesaurus to find wild new ways to describe “kidnapping and transporting across state lines”.

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

Remember when Kirk Watson let DPS patrol Austin and they immediately racially profiled everyone from Rundberg to Riverside?

He collaborated with Greg Abbott to police Austin while our DA had like 30 cops indicted after 2020.

Watson is not going to do shit. He thinks of them as coworkers.

There was a moment, very recently, when the popular sentiment was firmly in favor of addressing police violence and unaccountability; the response from these same politicians was “fund the police.”

“But the politicians are scared of police violence,” hmm how do you think we feel about it?

FUCK ICE FOREVER

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

“Who was president in 2020?” remains one of the most pertinent questions in American politics—absurd, yes, but here we are—and that extends to “who was president January 1 - 19, 2021?”
joycewhitevance.bsky.social
That’s a nice trick, since Biden wasn’t the president on Jan 6.

The eating gives it away every time.

I mean, so do a lot of other things in the video, but it's the way the food never actually gets swallowed that gets me.

The end of federal enforcement of special ed laws. Some states - including MN - will likely be ok. But a lot of disabled kids in a lot of states are going to lose the education that federal law and decades of jurisprudence say they are owed.
Education Department wipes out special ed office in shutdown layoffs, union says
The Education Department laid off nearly everyone at the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.

The headline isn't quite right. There were 3 shootings at various Mississippi homecoming activities. At least 6 people are dead and 20 were injured. In 2 of the shootings, suspects have either not been apprehended or identified.

It's too easy to get guns.

It's so frustrating! Why is it so hard just to look at the criteria, instead of whatever image people have in their heads of what they think a ND person looks like?

It's because he talks like an adult, and if you only ask him about things he's interested in, he'll talk your ear off. If you buy into a lot of dated stereotypes about autistic kids having flat affect and not being able to carry on a conversation, you'll think he couldn't be autistic.

I'm not kidding when I say I know almost an entire small town of people who will be parroting this horse shit by Monday, because they absolutely, without question believe it.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

Via: www.nbcnews.com/politics/tru...
The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

🧵 regarding the shutdown:

The Democrats aren’t being clear enough about this but we can be: this shutdown is about saving lives.

If we don’t reverse the Medicaid cuts (and the ACA subsidies on insurance bought through the exchanges) that Republicans made this year, people will die.

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

And they almost never do.

Billionaires: Let's gobble up all the resources, create vast monopolies, underpay workers, gouge prices on everything, and make so much money on everyone else's backs, we couldn't build enough swimming pools to hold it all!

Also billionaires: Why do I have to see poor people in public? 😡😡😡

The reason SF has problems with "open air drug use" is because housing prices have been driven through the roof by the influx of high-paying tech jobs, the high proportion of investor buyers for all housing purchases, and a housing shortage.

A lot of this is the rich bleeding the city dry.
