A note (posted to FB) from one of the school teachers who stayed behind in Kipnuk. About 50-100 people stayed behind. This is a good update (from a couple of days ago) on how things were handled with the Typhoon Dogs.

Yesterday was hard for all of us. The National guard announced that it was time to evacuate and everyone had to be out by the end of the day or they were on their own. They could take 1 bag per person. I watched families choose between taking carefully handwoven baskets and traditional heirlooms or bringing clothes and supplies for their kids. There were a lot of tears. Many people were so rushed they left plates half full of food on tables. We hugged our students, hoping we will see them again. Some of them shared their fears about their new schools or teachers. Saying goodbye to our friends and fellow school employees was... I have no words.
I was devastated and angry. This is my home. These people are my family. This community means so much to me and it was heartbreaking to see everyone leaving, not knowing when, or if, they would return. I told people that they are strong, that this community is strong, and we will be back. We will see each other again. I know they will rebuild. I only pray I can be a part of it.
In all the chaos, we learned that pets were not being allowed on the planes. People were facing the option of leaving their loyal friends to die out in the cold or to put them down humanely. As most of you know, my dogs are my babies. These people have lost so much, I could not stand to see them lose more. I got in contact with Bethel Friends of Canines to see what could do. By that night we had a charter plane coming for the dogs. Today we spent the day wrangling dogs and got 2 more plane loads out. I truly cannot express my thanks for Jesslyn, Zuly, and Mark with BFoC, Cara from fish and wildlife, as well as Spencer and the pilots. Us catching dogs would be useless without somewhere to send them. These people have helped us get over 50 dogs out of the village. Many have owners, some whose numbers we duct taped to their collars (or collars made of duct tape if they did not have one). BFoC will reunite them with their families wherever they are. If t…
