Separating truth from falsehood in environments saturated with carefully designed falsehoods intended to mislead otherwise intelligent and qualified people is a distinct skill unrelated to the practice of medicine or even the academic study of medicine, I think.

So while everyone is busy assuming that the eliza effect is capable of capturing even very smart people and that this academic has been captured, I think it’s much more likely the academic just sees a dozen things on TV every day proclaiming that “AI” has now happened and is ready to use.

Many people will have great theories about the nature of cognition etc, but in this case it’s much simpler: like almost everyone, the incredibly experienced, smart, credible academic lives in an information environment that is completely saturated with total bullshit on every technical topic.
