They gutted the Washington Post. CBS. NYT. Now Teen Vogue.

The point isn't to bring in more conservatives. They've reached that saturation point.

They are killing the fourth estate and buying up the social media to control the messages we see. These were all targeted to disarm the left of truth.

They are destroying what SHE built.

#TeenVogue
Elaine Welteroth, former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue and youngest editor of Condé Nast ever, and the 2nd African American to hold this position, changed Teen Vogue to be more politically conscious.

Traffic to TeenVogue.com: 2.7M to 9.2M visitors a year, print subscriptions jumped 535%
Ex-Teen Vogue editor Elaine Welteroth: ‘The headlines implied I was a token black hire’
Welteroth was just 29 when Anna Wintour made her editor-in-chief. Months later, the magazine shut down. What did she do next?

TLDR: Teen Vogue's coverage is about to be watered down in a way that serves no one. The politics section, which featured cutting edge stories on repro rights, the economy, and more is now gone. Black women are no longer at what remains.

Everybody loses. This is #TheDoubleTax.

Condé Nast has laid off all the black female writers at Teen Vogue, as well as trans writers.

This was formerly one of the best news sources, empowering women and girls.

Commercial media is rapidly whitewashing and silencing female, BIPOC & LGBTQ+ voices.
We strongly condemn @CondéNast’s consolidation plans for Teen Vogue, a move that is clearly designed to blunt the award-winning magazine’s insightful journalism at a time when it is needed the most. More from our statement:

No more Black or trans staffers. No politics of any kind. The cowardice of mainstream media isn't just insulting, it's *boring.* Now TV is just like any other beauty rag. Why not just kill it quickly? Why the slow-motion pretense?
thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

The right wing and "radical centrist" (right wing) takeover of mainstream media has been shitty, but this is a total body blow. One of the few outlets doing real political reporting taken out by a corporation deciding that it's bottom line is better served by capitulating, and we're all worse off

Teen Vogue was one of the only outlets that took young people seriously as political actors and covered how they're organizing, voting, and being impacted by state + national legislation.

It was a launching pad for so many great young journalists

Also people tend to assume a level of family support that poor people are less likely to have hence their struggles to say afloat
it gets tiring to keep explaining what it means to be poor to people.

it is not that poor people don’t know that cooking is cheaper:

cooking costs time. it costs pots and pans. it costs a working stove and your utilities on. it costs you’ve been on your feet all day and your babies are tired.

Also Trump should be impeached and removed for this

Good reason to not negotiate with Republicans on a budget
Days before Election Day, President Trump told correspondent Norah O’Donnell that he would potentially withhold federal funds if front-runner Zohran Mamdani wins the election for NYC mayor.

Centrists hate Mamdani because voters are starting to hear "that's impossible" how centrists really mean it: My wealthy friends don't want to pay more in taxes so everyone can have nice things
Abigail Spanberger takes a swipe at Mamdani, saying "maybe he should be a Democrat" and that his campaign promises are dishonest.

Teen Vogue is over party (nail in the coffin of any political journalism on mainstream anything)

So now Teen Vogue, who have garnered respect for investigative journalism in the midst of growing capitalist media parroting fascist propaganda, has capitulated to the fascists too, got it *takes notes.

This is bullshit!

Support investigative journalism AND investigative journalists!
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

I am so upset.

Last week Time Magazine solicited a piece from me on Zohran Mamdani & anti-Muslim hate. I pitched a framing re the dehumanization of Muslims & how Mamdani’s inclusive, socialist campaign in its content resists that. They agreed. I wrote the piece. 1/
To be asked to write about racism only to be racially aggressed in the editing process is a new level unlocked I have to say.

I'm amazed at people whose advice for people losing SNAP is shit like "learn to cook", "buy in bulk", or "grow some herbs". Are they delusional, or have they never been BROKE broke? You can't even use a Safeway gift card to get food delivered (very helpful for people without reliable transport)

It is very clear the gutting of Teen Vogue is about silencing their excellent political coverage. Corporations want you uninformed and shut off from meaningful journalism. And they’re staggeringly successful at it so far.

Can we all agree that when a president pardons a guy who was convicted for financing terrorists, and then says he didn't know the guy but "I was told" to pardon him, the follow question MUST be "Who told you to pardon him?" But CBS never asked: who is making decisions in the White House? 1/

Vogue's absorption of and closure of Teen Vogue feels like -- is -- a direct attack on a new generation of queer journalists who were committed to excellence and the power of journalism to illuminate the stories of people at the margins.

And it impacts all of us, no matter our age.

I keep seeing journalism described as an "ecosystem" and I guess that tracks because it's undergoing an extinction crisis caused by billionaires, too.

well they are notable to Muslims...
New York City is home to about a million Muslims—nearly a quarter of the country’s entire Muslim population. Yet epithets such as “extremist” and “jihadist” are used to describe Zohran Mamdani with such regularity that they’re hardly notable anymore.
What Zohran Mamdani’s Bid for Mayor Reveals About Being Muslim in America
The Islamophobic attacks on the candidate carry the weight of history and the urgency of the present.
