"You are what you eat" applies to your media diet, too.
Her face is a weapon of mass destruction
This is a time we need to come together to ask - what will we do today to plan for tomorrow? How do we make sure our neighbors are safe, fed, cared for, supported? How do we build from here rather than compete in a hunger games scenario we never signed up for but were fed this is the only way?
I find the narrative today will be a problem whether we win or lose in the NYC mayoral race. Because this is a time where we need to challenge the police who are siding with ICE. We need to challenge the military who go to cities with mayors who will stand up to them.
Now, we see people protesting #nokingsdays. We see peaceful groups gather against ICE, and for their neighbors. We see people coming together to support food banks when SNAP is cut. This is why electoral politics were never meant to be the only means of changing the status quo, but just part of it.
The problem with only focusing on electoral politics is it continues to believe the system isn't in need of changing, or that power is outside of people's hands. It's one of the most egregious forms of supporting the current rot there is. The only way to change politics is from the streets.
Take mutual aid as an example. It is not just a supplement, it's a form of community. It's what social safety nets we use in government are based off of, and are often co-opted. See the free breakfast idea from the Black Panthers. It both fed children and educated them about systemic issues.
The issue is people still use elections as a premise, or stasis. It's the topic - we don't see outside of it. This bubble, framed by news cycles (24/7 network television) is a construct. There are other ways to participate in democracies that will make more change to the system.
Electoral hype/news cycle: a thread. Political communications scholars have long talked about how the election cycle doesn't end, but rarely does the public hear about how this has changed our psyche. This isn't simply a zeitgeist or a narrative, it's a belief system.
Whatever happens today, people will still not learn about hanging all their hopes of a democracy on electoral politics. Instead, I'm celebrating the death of Dick Cheney.
