Yup.
Absolute grant mantra- never, ever p*ss off the reviewer.

Our team has published a new study in Avian Conservation Ecology showing that #cats kill between 19–197 million #birds each year in Canada!

In the time it has taken you to read ~3 posts (1 min) 114 birds have been killed at the paws of cats in Canada.

I really wish I had a bazillion dollars so I could change this

Yeah, it’s awful that this is “today’s” worst research funding challenge.
It’s so brutal for young investigators like you.
resdevbcch.bsky.social
Note that this depends a lot on grant source and type. Riskier/earlier work can often be funded by disease orgs, for eg.
But for current NIH (or, in Canada, CIHR) it needs to be as strong as possible

I know that sounds simplistic, but my whole job for past 26y is strategic research program planning and proposal review. It’s important to offset reviewer doubt.

One option is to plan for the (projected) time/deadline at which the only thing standing between you and the work is the money.
ie methods are solid, data are clear, next steps make sense to you and others.

Indeed.
Also helps not to try to explain everything in figure legend

Only yesterday I advised someone to shorten legends and increase font size.

It’s such a common issue.

I do not get it when fully grown adults are called kids!
Also legal adults at age 18 so responsible for their actions.
