Naval battles, an elephant heist, a massacre, a city in flames, a letter in a tree, and a chance meeting that invented the concept of “America.” Buckle up, this gets wild.

Suggesting that out gay actors shouldn’t be given opportunities to play gay characters over actors who present as straight because some of those straight actors *might* be in the closet and “discriminating” against straight men thus might harm closeted gay men too is the most pretzel logic ever.

I tried to explain this to people the other day - a rainbow flag to me as a gay man means, “LGBTQA+ people are welcome and safe here”. No more. No less. And removing them means, “You are not welcome or safe here”. No more. No less.
stories like this piss me off for multiple reasons

- stop participating in the erosion of rights of our fellow americans
- this is not the maryland way
- bitch youre in maryland, one of the bluest states, stop being such a reactionary wingnut

A Maryland mayor removes rainbow crosswalks, citing neutrality concerns
“Our City is home to a diverse and vibrant community, and we want our public spaces to be welcoming to all,” Salisbury Mayor Randy Taylor said in announcing the decision.

Isn't "sincerely believe" a legal concept, such as "reasonable person", "reasonable doubt"?
Why does what other people claim to “sincerely believe” matter to my rights and liberties??

I wonder if Starmer thought the rightwing rags were now on his side after enough racism and transphobia?

It's never "Inheritance street" or "tax evasion street" is it.

As if needed benefits is a fun way to live. And as if all those benefits don't rapidly funnel back to the rich in rent, bills etc anyway.

In Welsh, Llwydaneg is the name of the langue (Breton) spoken in the place called Llydaw (Brittany).

Llydaw meant "continent, mainland" but shifted to "Continental Europe" and then "place in Continental Europe with Brittonic speakers".

It is related to "llydan" (wide, broad) and "lled" (width).

This is probably why I've been spending time just reading about astronomy.
jesus christ, not sure what it is today but every single post about every single piece of news is just harrowingly depressing, from Reform racism and RFK on vaccines to unhinged BBC attacks on Reeves and the horrors in Palestine, could we not maybe have a gentler start to the week, fucking hell

As the two stars orbit around each other, a person growing up in Proxima Centauri b would probably hear their grandma say something like "when I was your age the Big Twin used to be the one on the right, not the left".
follow-up:

The much smaller Proxima Centauri has a known planet. From there you'd be able to see the binary Alpha Centauri system as two ordinary stars very close to each other, but definitely not as a striking as someone looking up from an Alpha Centauri planet.

If you boarded a spaceship moving at light-speed, in just over four years you’d reach Alpha Centauri, our nearest neighbouring star. Four years of flight, and the scale of home would already begin to dissolve into something both tiny and strange, but weirdly familiar. 1/7

The irrationality makes sense as class struggle. AI is capital’s dream: ending dependence on labour. When market forces fail to make it profitable, they turn to state power, national security status, bailouts. The same state intervention they’ve always denounced for workers.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

"Even if OpenAI is making $200 billion by 2030, it would still need $200bi in funding to stay afloat. OpenAI's models like Sora 2 and GPT-5 cost millions of dollars a *day* to run, requiring enormous amounts of computing power."

Wait, so we can help bankrupt OpenAI if we use ChatGPT for free a lot?
