Everyone has a different threshold and different reasons they might keep an account

Like the event that actually spurred me to switch was really just a "final nail in the coffin" thing. I already hated it there and the direction it was trending, just not enough to hard switch ecosystems at the time

everyone on here seems to think that there's just one feature you can add or remove from social media to make people not go insane on here. this belief, i think, is itself a form of madness

Trump might not be the brains of the operation but he is CRUCIAL for narrative control and getting buy-in from a lot of Americans, who find him extremely charismatic.

If the hole he leaves isn't filled fast I think a lot of the momentum behind it would falter

Up to everyone what happens then.

BREAKING: Kristi Noem just discovered the founder of Antifa by questioning their girlfriend. This is the first time the world will see who the founder really is, and it is shocking. Because of the absolute terror this imagery causes, we are sharing it in a follow-up post in this thread.

WARNING 🚨🧵

Still waiting on the Soros checks to hit our accounts. Someone tell him to please hurry groceries keep getting more expensive!

I'm not even sure why they bother with this kind of announcement.

Nobody who WANTS something like the ACA believes they'll do it, because they definitely won't

and pretty much everyone who hates the ACA thinks healthcare should be 100% private, and will not care if there's no replacement.

if every democrat doesn’t use the “we took freedom of speech away” on every messaging apparatus they have every single day for the next 4 years assume they want to lose

Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

My eyes are on the 18th. It would be a pretty good time for them to "have a law enforcement operation" where large protest groups are going to be moving through. How it would play out after that has already been written in front of us 100 times on smaller scales.

In that case, imo, a culture shift needs to happen.

I think part of the issue is bad UX for forums, but we can't deny the common allure there seems to be for an app that is essentially just a text box with a "show the whole world this" button
lordllama.bsky.social
Like, ultimately I believe we will NEVER get over "individual mod makes individual decisions nobody likes", and until someone figures out how to make mastodon more appealing to average folk we're ALSO going to have to deal with the problems of centralized moderation.
lordllama.bsky.social
Granted, but ultimately the data has to live somewhere and SOMEONE will be making decisions like that. That's unavoidable.

There is content we all (hopefully) agree to call "illegal" (eg, revenge porn), and we all agree should be terminated with more prejudice than a 3rd party moderation filter.
lordllama.bsky.social
100% agree with the "junk drawer" critique

Though forums serve a wonderful niche, there's clearly a general desire for something more "open" (or we'd be arguing on a message board)

It just feels like the tools the app/protocol provide for an individual to keep the drawer clean are underutilized

I am not a lawyer, so frankly I am not equipped to answer that question for you

But what i do know is that, in our non-ideal world, the options for a response are pretty limited

But if your chief concern is state censorship, then imo having platform level moderation capability is only detrimental

To be clear, I think there is still a space for platform-level modding, but I also think for stability that it should be relegated to no-question illegal or hateful conduct.

It's easy to forget that the more faith we users put on corp mod teams, the closer we are to another musk-twitter scenario

The cycle you're describing is true

That said, I have never used a "public" social platform that gives the user as much authority over their own feeds as bluesky does

Eg, having 3rd party curated feeds and mod lists let you "pick and choose" what level of moderation you want, imperfect as it is

I am BEGGING for someone to port opensearch to rust or something. Just get it off of java for the love of pete.

Honestly it's kinda like how PDF is an awful format for literally anything except making something pretty for an end user to read visually, but all the customers at my job still expect reports and data tables in PDF format delivered by email instead of literally any of the dozens of better ways.

I agree that it isn't Libre Office's fault that MS sticks to proprietary formats that are intentionally obtuse and difficult to work with. 100% MS being garbage as a company

Unfortunately, some 95% of my exposure to that kind of software is in the context of someone sending/expecting .docx/.xlsx

The last time I really gave Libre Office a try was in ~2014 or so and as I recall the experience was.... just terrible. Bugs, frequent crashes, poor compatibility with MS document formats, etc.

I haven't kept up with the project at all since then, but is it actually good now?
