Can someone who knows explain the reason Brits seem SO much more willing to give ongoing Harry Potter projects a pass or even happily participate? Is it national pride? Or is it that TERFS are just seen as less hateful there than the average progressive American finds them to be?

Something I heard from editors when pitching my memoir was that they didn’t feel emotionally “hooked” by the material. To be fair, this can be hard w/a proposal format, but it’s ALSO hard b/c writing about yourself is scary & self-protective mechanisms work counter to the goal of bearing hard truths

In her new book, Olivia Nuzzi “makes anyone hungry for prurient details trudge through a grandiose postmodern pastiche that attempts to situate her personal catastrophe in the context of our collective one,” writes our columnist Michelle Goldberg.
Opinion | Olivia Nuzzi Isn’t Telling All
Olivia Nuzzi doesn’t seem to recognize that her collaboration with Robert Kennedy was a grave professional betrayal.

The way people’s logistical brains (I’m sure I’m guilty of it too) break on airplanes due to manufactured scarcity of space & resources is really something. If you need to get something BEHIND me & you step in FRONT of me, you have now blocked YOURSELF from the item. But you ARE “in front,” I guess!

This was something I worried about when the Covid shutdowns narrative was a generalized panic of “Kids are ‘falling behind’!” w/out a robust pedagogical convo about how to ACTUALLY support learning. Like so many Covid “opportunities” to change systems for the better, we let this one get away from us
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

A college student complaining about a grade on a paper is not national news. Not even close. The details have minimal import outside the class itself.

Well-funded political activists targeting profs and TAs—in this case because they're trans—with the help of elected state officials? National issue.

There is a vast chasm btwn the assumed norms of someone who thinks it’s fine to bring a “surprise friend” to an intimate get together/outing & someone who thinks this is a fundamental breach of trust & it would save everyone SO much time if these two types of people just steered clear of each other.

Btw, being open re:your personal beliefs AND making it clear to your students that you’ll always grade them on the merit of their arguments even when their beliefs differ from yours is actually the ONLY way to win any respect/trust from conservative students, it’s just that it doesn’t always work.

The thing about the Oklahoma University student's shitty paper that I keep thinking about is how much it reminds me of when Bari Weiss's sister got national media attention for writing an open letter to all the schools she didn't get into.

Every one of these kids thinks they’re William Jennings Bryan in the Scopes fucking Monkey Trial but they don’t know that even HE knew his biblical premise was shit but he did it anyway b/c he was worried about the (very real) threats that SOCIAL Darwinism posed for mainstreaming eugenics¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I named my fists Kamtza and Bar Kamtza cuz they’re the reason you’re gonna get destroyed.
I named my fists White and Noise because you're about to experience an airborne toxic event.
I named my fists Chekhov and Gun because you know they're coming but you don't know when

My favorite fact about Tom Stoppard is that he uncreditedly punched up the script to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and if you rewatch it it is extremely obvious where he laid his hands on it & that he undoubtedly made it at least 2x better than whatever they started with.

‘Remigration’ is a term that comes out of the European far right. Its use by the DHS account is a sign of democratic and epistemic collapse

A reminder for those who are not aware: "remigration" is the process of deporting all non-white people from a country. It includes citizens and is, by definition, ethnic cleansing.

And to be clear: this is not fake. I just screenshot it myself.
