My mom sadly needs more chemotherapy. He cancer has begun to spread to her right lung. Doctors tell us she can still fight it and survive with treatment ($1300 for chemo). Pls we desperately need help!

Sadly my mom’s lung cancer has begun to spread to her right lung. We are still processing this information, just when we thought she was getting better of it.

This reminds me of Leanne Simpson’s reflection in Theory of Water on a similar photo of children at residential school, witnessing both the structures of violence implied behind the photo yet also the possibility of those children “dreaming beyond their present moment.”
and they remind me of this too. 48 I also see the invisible enclosure of intimate violence making them keep still and watchful, not participating. I can almost see their spirits drawn upward into the sky to meet with their ancestors and the ones who haven't yet been born. At first look, the photograph felt to me as if it captured the humiliation of the colo-nized-as if those little perfect otters were being mocked by the colonizer, who was fishing as a pastime on a beautiful summer day while the Anishinaabe kids, confined in a million ways, could only watch and, I hope, dream. I hoped they were dreaming of swimming and of splashing in the water. Dreaming of jumping in. Dreaming of running so fast their legs were ahead of them. So here the Nigigoonsiwag are, on the side of the river. Maybe their ancestors are awakening them in their bones. They are feeling the heat of Niibin. They are seeing Zibing. They are surrounded by trees, and perhaps they can hear the falls. They are watching a man fish, which is a clue to another way of living. Maybe the moment we are witnessing in this photo is when Nigigoonsiwag see through the stone of their diminished daily life in residential school. Maybe they are dreaming beyond their present moment.
