I can’t help but think today about how many young people were savaged on social media, branded as anti-semites and abandoned by their schools for daring to call for a ceasefire. I remember saying that it was the first time I can remember that calling for ceasefire was regarded as a hostile demand.

Do NOT use vanilla in place of sherry! I just made this exactly as written and used vanilla since I didn't have sherry. It is now down the disposal. The smell alone was a huge indicator of what it would taste like. Whoever thought of vanilla with meat? Nasty.

When a trans woman dies of natural causes, at an age greater than 75, having lived more than half her life as herself, that is cause for celebration, not mourning.

Thank you, Miss Major.

"We even have a Muslim coming!"

This year's MediaFest - a conference for student journalists has a Faith breakout section that includes speakers from the Alliance Defending Freedom - a SPLC designated Hate Group (oddly CJR's article doesn't mention that).

I hope attendees and sponsors pull out.

But in recent weeks, MediaFest’s schedule has been amended to include people from other religious backgrounds. There will be more than twenty faith track speakers, on panels tackling such questions as “Can the Bible inform reporters on how to cover the news?” and discussing censorship on the basis of faith. “We even have a Muslim coming,” said Naomi Balk—who Thursday, October 16th

Description
As culture shifts away from religion, reporters are caught in a paradox: non-religious reporters report on topics of faith, and reporters of faith report on non-religious topics. What does it look like to report with objectivity in an age where not all perspectives are viewed as valid? Hear from Tyson Langhofer, director of the ADF Center for Academic Freedom, as he shares lessons from history about freedom of the press.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

It's not an opinion Keira, one side wants to kill and torture us and the other just wants to eat taco bell and play video games.

We are not the same.

in trying to find the illustrated version and not just the tumblr text post, i saw the judy hopps abortion comic in google results MULTIPLE times
A two-panel comic illustrated in black pen on grid paper. It depicts a rabbit-like creature frantically entering through a door with a panicked expression. The text reads:
(Title) "Turning the page to a new year)
(Panel 1 rabbit) "MESSAGE TO ALL BITCHES"
(Panel 2 rabbit) "PLEASE SURVIVE"

I wrote up a thread on why this is going to be worse than the vast majority of folks think it will.

Special education isn't a "nice thing to have." It isn't "charity" or doing something to make us feel better. It is a right. The right to a Free Appropriate Public Education is codified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by a Republican president.

This is catastrophic in ways that folks who don't interact with The System really don't understand.

The dominoes meme here ends with increased child abuse, further criminalization of disability, and a further decimation of our already precarious health care system.
quantumham.bsky.social
The number of students in the US who are helped by IDEA is vast - 7.5 million. That's 15% of the total public student population. What I'm describing in this thread won't happen to all of them, maybe not even most of them, but it'll happen to enough of them that this will be a catastrophe.
quantumham.bsky.social
Disabled people are already over-represented in the US prison population, and this is just going to compound that. Any money saved from killing IDEA off will be outspent by an order of magnitude on imprisoning people whose only crime was being disabled in public.
quantumham.bsky.social
The kids aren't getting services, they're kicked out of schools, the families can't re-engineer their whole lives overnight to provide care and services, ERs can't take the new load, so the only thing that always gets funded - law enforcement - is the backstop.
quantumham.bsky.social
And of course, cops will become involved, because when you only fund cops you defund everyone else who could be responding. Take a nonverbal 16-year-old who's having a moment, add an impatient cop who can't keep his hands to himself, and you'll end up with assault on an officer.
quantumham.bsky.social
Eventually, when a job goes from maybe a few security-related sedations to doing it on the regular, to the same kids over and over, people will find a different line of work. And honestly? I can't blame 'em. It's a hard job that sucks sometimes, and gutting IDEA will make it harder.
quantumham.bsky.social
Behavioral issues that would normally be handled by trained staff will now become a trip to the ER - for the kid, the caregiver, maybe both. Behavioral issues will first be handled by security, and then with sedation, because the ER staff aren't experts and they are BUSY.
quantumham.bsky.social
But if the kid doesn't go to school, no one outside the family knows until/unless they see, say, a medical professional who knows what to look for. And even if they do, abusers pass off abuse of disabled people all the time.

And those medical professionals will be *tired*.
quantumham.bsky.social
Schools pull services, kids don't get what they need to succeed, they end up not succeeding, many are (illegally) expelled. Families are now 24/7 caregivers on top of the sole providers of services. This increases stress 1000% on already stressed families, and abuse sometimes results.
quantumham.bsky.social
On top of that, they can pull all kinds services from these kids. Your average parent is not equipped to provide all those services - you need professionals.

Before IDEA, a number of these kids would have been institutionalized. For better or worse, those institutions no longer exist.
quantumham.bsky.social
There's already huge issues with schools treating disabled kids illegally. IDEA - the folks who end up enforcing a lot of this - got gutted. Schools can now confidently discriminate against students with disabilities, since consequence won't come unless the kid's family has sue-a-school money.
