Words are canceled due to unforeseen circumstances (we apologize for the inconvenience). Sometimes I make terrible beauty that refuses the light yet gorges itself on darkness. A cruel little beast of letters and punctuation that rules my pages. It recoils at volume, playing a game of retreat, hiding inside vowels while taunting at the lack of exposure. It perspires. It bruises my margins leaving me welted with ink stains I quickly explain away as a silly accident. It asks to remain unnamed though it holds a title. If released, it might be repurposed Tamed. Trimmed. Tied to someone else’s meaning. So I keep it behind locked doors, for my eyes only. It slips into the upholstery, into the architecture of ordinary things. I leave them curled up and crinkled, as they do the uncredited labor of a monster at the gate summoned to the task of keeping my walls upright preventing my collapse.

i typed this up on a subway train, which was silly
10/22/25 - shackburger single w/ pickles, no tomato I have this recurring appointment every week in midtown near grand central. and near lunch. 'there's nothing to eat around here' i say every week. every week i find myself at Shake Shack. defeating feeling in a city of a thousand burger spots. Acceptance is the first step toward peace maybe. i used to eat 1.5 In-N-Out double-doubles / week on average and always viewed the addiction with a depraved kind of pride but i wasn't in the city of a thousand burger spots (and crucially i was paying near half what i do at shake shack for a larger burger. in-n-out i love you and miss you). i'm having a hard time buying into the new ritual. Gun-to-my-head i'll probably tell you the shackburger (Shake Shack's flagship offering) is a more perfect burger than the double-double. if i *have* told you that before i probably also explained that the shackburger is closest to the burger i'm trying to make when left to my own burger-creating devices. a sort of platonic ideal. they made all the correct choices. I still would choose a double-double 4 times out of 5. there's something deliriously un-recreatable about it. the folks at In-N-Out didn't perfect the burger itself, but they may have perfected the fast-food burger. i'm often missing it, even in the city of a thousand burger spots. nothing comes close. This week like many i find myself at the Shake Shack stall on grand central's dining concourse. sitting on a bar stool. good burger. I leave that barstool and look for a quieter chair somewhere in grand central, anywhere in grand central, to sit and type this. nothing. nothing anywhere. no chairs for all but the customers. i end up on a subway train, typing awkwardly at the keyboard on my lap. i used to laugh at people on their computer on the subway, but i get it now. damn near last place in the city you can reliably find a chair.
